Case Study: Composite Construction for FLAT Slabs with Integrated Building Services

About 10 years ago the idea arose of developing a new flat slab type with integrated building services. The first idea concentrated on a pre-fabricated slab element with a sandwich cross section. The open space (hollow space) between the two outer shells of the sandwich is available for various installation devices. It was also necessary to provide appropriately large openings in the web members joining the two outer shells. In order to provide the necessary strength around the large openings a steel plate was embedded within the concrete web element. Appropriate composite connecting means were additionally needed to provide bonding capacity to the respective outer shells of the sandwich. In order to satisfy these requirements for the bonding devices, two independent solution proposals were offered. The web members were additionally pre-stressed, in order to reduce the absolute values of the shear stresses. In order to optimize the bonding element, two variants were tested. Different projects were built with the new composite element.

Design Model for Continuous Composite Beams with Web Openings

Continuous composite beams can be designed according to the plastic hinge theory. In that case in a statically indeterminate system plastic hinges are formed one after the other until a kinematic mechanism is generated (ultimate limit state). In the case of continuous beams with web openings, areas of plastic deformation can be generated in the area near the opening itself. This means that under certain circumstances local plastic moment hinges are formed in the corners of the opening. All these local hinges together result in a global plastic hinge for shear forces. Up to now the structural and deformation behaviour of such a hinge was not clarified if it acts as a global mechanism with one degree of freedom. The necessary conditions to generate such a plastic hinge for shear forces were also not clear. At Kaiserslautern a research project, that examined such beams, has been completed. Its results and a design model are described in this paper.

Die Stahlverbundbauweise hat sich aus technischen und wirtschaftlichen Erwagungen zu einer Regelbauweise fur offene Parkhauser entwickelt. In diesem Beitrag werden die Randbedingungen und Besonderheiten der Ausfuhrung von Stahlverbundparkhausern erlautert. Gebrauchliche und bewahrte Tragwerke und Deckensysteme werden beschrieben. Besonderheiten hinsichtlich der Dauerhaftigkeit der Konstruktionen werden erlautert. Steel composite Constructions for open Car Parks Steel composite constructions have developed by technical and economical reasons to a standard construction for open car parks without fire protection. In this paper some particular items of steel car parks are pointed out. Regular systems and slab constructions are described. Durability of steel and concrete members is shown.
