Observation of discrete quadratic surface solitons

We report the first observation of discrete quadratic surface solitons in self-focusing and defocusing periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide arrays. By operating on either side of the phase-matching condition and using the cascading nonlinearity, both in-phase and staggered discrete surface solitons were observed. This represents the first experimental demonstration of staggered/gap surface solitons at the interface of a semi-infinite nonlinear lattice. The experimental results were found to be in good agreement with theory.

We studied numerically and experimentally an ultrafast passive nonlinear temporal reshaping mechanism based on spatial soliton emission in Ti periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides combined with spatial filtering. We demonstrated efficient temporal reshaping of 4-ps pulses at 1548 nm.

We observed spatial addressing of light by bidirectional spatial emission of beams at a quadratically nonlinear interface in periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides. The interface consisted of the boundary between two quasi-phase-matched regions with different poling period. We show the intensity and phase-mismatch (temperature or wavelength) dependence of the phenomena.

We observed discrete quadratic solitons with higher order second harmonic modes in lithium niobate waveguide arrays. We also measured a cancellation of the nonlinearity due to the interaction of multiple second harmonic resonances.

Single channel excitation, discrete solitons and bistable response in PPLN waveguide arrays

Robert Iwanow; George I. Stegeman; R. Schiek; Thomas Pertsch; F. Lederer; Yoohong Min; Wolfgang Sohler

We report nonlinear optical behavior unique to weakly coupled PPLN arrays of phase-matched channel waveguides with single channel excitation. With second harmonic seeding, the response becomes bistable, locking into different power ratios at the ouput.

Staggered and unstaggered solitons in quadratically nonlinear lithium niobate waveguide arrays

R. Schiek; Robert Iwanow; George I. Stegeman; Thomas Pertsch; F. Lederer; Yoohong Min; Wolfgang Sohler

We report the first observation of staggered and unstaggered quadratic discrete solitons in arrays of coupled waveguides. Intensity profiles, powers and stability of the solitons were measured in good agreement with theoretical predictions.

A resealable closure system for use on a container comprising an insert and a removable plug to seal an opening in the insert; the plug has a soft, hollow bottom that is shaped to fill the insert opening and which functions to provide one or more sealing opportunities; and, in the preferred embodiment, this plug is linked to the insert at one end by a pair of hinge arms which serve to guide the plug through a proscribed range of motion as it is inserted into or removed from the insert opening.

The evolution from diffraction, to single and then multiple quadratic soliton generation, and finally the onset of modulational instability were observed for wide fundamental beams in both birefringence and quasi-phase matched LiNbO3 slab waveguides.
