In this paper, we consider an equilibrium search model of the labor market where the job offers are characterized by the wage level and the work duration and the workers are heterogeneous relative to access to minimum income programmes. We show that increasing hourly minimum wage leads the firms to post more part-time jobs and then contributes to increase voluntary unemployment. We emphasize also the consequences of reforms of the social benefit system.

We compute transition rates from unemployment by means of a model that permits a double perspective. First we use a nonstationnary structural job search model, in order to distinguish the agents strategy from his environment. Secondly, we direct the study towards a skill analysis. Finally, we give the agent the ability to anticipate fututre risks of unemployment.

BackgroundTo investigate the relationship between hospital volume activities and the survival for Epithelial Ovarian Carcinoma (EOC) patients in France.MethodsThis retrospective study using prospectively implemented databases was conducted on an exhaustive cohort of 267 patients undergoing first-line therapy during 2012 in the Rhone-Alpes Region of France. We compared Progression-Free Survival for Epithelial Ovarian Carcinoma patients receiving first-line therapy in high- (i.e. ≥ 12 cases/year) vs. low-volume hospitals. To control for selection bias, multivariate analysis and propensity scores were used. An adjusted Kaplan-Meier estimator and a univariate Cox model weighted by the propensity score were applied.ResultsPatients treated in the low-volume hospitals had a probability of relapse (including death) that was almost two times (i.e. 1.94) higher than for patients treated in the high-volume hospitals (p < 0.001).ConclusionTo our knowledge, this is the first study conducted in this setting in France. As reported in other countries, there was a significant positive association between greater volume of hospital care for EOC and patient survival. Other factors may also be important such as the quality of the surgical resection.

The widely used Oaxaca decomposition applies to linear models. Extending it to commonly used nonlinear models such as duration models is not straightforward. This paper shows that the original decomposition that uses a linear model can also be obtained by an application of the mean value theorem. By extension, this basis provides a means of obtaining a decomposition formula which applies to nonlinear models which are continuous functions. The detailed decomposition of the explained component is expressed in terms of what are usually referred to as marginal effects. Explicit formulae are provided for the decomposition of some nonlinear models commonly used in applied econometrics including binary choice, duration and Box-Cox models.
