Iron is one of the most important elements in the metabolic process for all living system. However, both its deficiency and excess from normal permissible limits can induce serious disorders. We synthesized a europium-based metal-organic framework (Eu-MOF), EuL(3) (L = 4-(4-carboxyphenyl)-2,2: 6,2″-terpyridine), under hydrothermal conditions, and used it as a solid luminescence sensor for Fe(3+) ions. The robust EuL(3) shows fast response (∼ 1 min) and high sensitivity (Stern-Volmer constant K(SV) = 4.1 × 10(3) L/mol) for Fe(3+) ions in aqueous solution or biological systems due to the existence of chelating terpyridine and open channels. The simple and portable test paper based on the EuL(3) fluorescent sensor system provides a convenient and reliable detection of Fe(3+) in every day applications. This pioneering work contributes to extend the potential application of Ln-MOFs to the biological and environmental areas.

A theranostic nanomedicine (CD-Oxa) is synthesized by means of the condensation reaction between the amino groups on the surface of fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) and the carboxyl group of the oxaliplatin derivative Oxa(IV)-COOH. CD-Oxa, which integrates the optical properties of CDs and the anticancer function of oxaliplatin, could be used for simultaneous drug delivery and fluorescent tracking.

A convenient synthesis of a BODIPY (1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-8-(4-pyridyl)-4,4-difluoroboradiazaindacene) labeled platinum compound (BODIPY-Pt) was developed by direct conjugation of cisplatin with the pyridine group of BODIPY. The membrane permeability and selective uptake of BODIPY-Pt in the mitochondria was studied using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). The fluorescent BODIPY-Pt conjugate showed high cellular proliferation inhibition against human cervical carcinoma (HeLa) and human breast cancer (MCF-7) cells, with half maximal inhibitory concentrations (IC50) of 27.37 and 12.14 μM, respectively. This work highlights the potential of using BODIPY labeled Pt compounds to realize the visualization of Pt distribution in living cells.

BODIPY Fluorescent Chemosensor for Cu2+ Detection and Its Applications in Living Cells: Fast Response and High Sensitivity

Copper is an essential trace element for the proper functioning of organ and metabolic process in humans. However, both its excess and deficiency in the body can result in adverse health effects. A BODIPY containing 2,2′-bipyridyl group was synthesized and used as a fluorescent chemodosimeter for selective Cu2+ detection in mild condition. This BODIPY shows fast response (~1xa0min) and high sensitivity for Cu2+ in aqueous solution due to the photoinduced electron transfer from the excited state of fluorophore to the bipyridyl unit complexed to Cu2+. The fluorescence quenching mechanism revealed by MALDI-TOF Mass spectra showed one Cu2+ could coordinate with two BODIPY molecules, and this coordination is reversible. This simple BODIPY dyes also could be used for sensing the Cu2+ in living cell. This work contributes to extend the potential applications of BODIPY to the biological and environmental areas.

Core Cross-Linked Micelle-Based Nanoreactors for Efficient Photocatalysis

Min Zheng; Zaicheng Sun; Zhigang Xie; Xiabin Jing

Stable nanoscale cross-linked polymer micelles containing Ru complexes (Ru-CMs) were prepared from monomethoxy[poly(ethylene glycol)]-block-poly(L-lysine) (MPEG-PLys) and [(bpy)2Ru(fmbpy)](PF6)2 (bpy=bipyridine, fmbpy=5-formy-5-methyl-2,2-bipyridine). To stabilize the micelles, bifunctional glutaraldehyde was used as a cross-linker to react with the free amino groups of the PLys block. After that, the Ru-CMs showed very good stability in common solvents. The Ru-CMs showed photocatalytic activity and selectivity in the oxidation of sulfides that were as high as those of the well-known [Ru(bpy)3(PF6)2] complex, because the micelles were swollen in the methanol-sulfide mixture. Moreover, because of the nanoscale size of the particles and their high stability, the Ru-CM photocatalysts can be readily recovered by ultrafiltration and reused without loss of photocatalytic activity. This work highlights the potential of using cross-linked micelles as a platform for developing highly efficient heterogeneous photocatalysts for a number of important organic transformations.

A lutetium bis(alkyl) complex stabilized by a flexible amino-phosphine ligand LLu(CH(2)Si(CH(3))(3))(2)(THF) (L = (2,6-C(6)H(3)(CH(3))(2))NCH(C(6)H(5))CH(2)P(C(6)H(5))(2)) was prepared which upon insertion of N,N-diisopropylcarbodiimide led to C-H activation via metalation of the ligand aryl methyl followed by reduction of the C[double bond, length as m-dash]N double bond.
