Bis(2, 6-dimesitylphenyl) indium bromide, (2, 6-Mes2C6H3)2 InBr (Mes = 2, 4, 6-Me3C6H2), I, has been prepared and characterized by 1H NMR, elemental analyses, IR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. I may be approached by either of two synthetic routes. Whereas I may be readily prepared from reaction of indium (III) bromide with (2, 6-dimesitylphenyl) lithium in Et2O, it may also be approached by an interesting disproportionation of Br2In-InBr2 in the presence of (2, 6-Mes2C6H3) Li. The title compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n (No. 14) with unit cell parameters a = 12.341 ((2)A, b = 20.799 (4) A, c = 16.512 (2) A, β = 101.18 (1)°, D calcd = 1.31 g cm −3, and V = 4158 (1)A3 for Z = 4. Refinement, based on 1661 observed reflections, converged at R = 0.072, Rw = 0.071. The In-Br bond distance is 2.505 (4) A. As the steric demands of the two bulky ligands are sufficient to result in a C-In-C bond angle of 157.3 (8)° — the widest angle reported for a three-coordinate indiu...

Trimethylaluminium or trimethylgallium reacts with 1,3-diisopropyl-4,5-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene 1 to afford the first organo-group 13 metal carbenes 2 (M = Al 2a, Ga 2b), which are characterized by elemental analyses, IR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Gallium chloride or indium chloride interacts with 2,6-bis(2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl)phenyllithium, (Mes*2C6- H3)Li (Mes* = C6H2Pri3-2,4,6), affording [(Mes*2C6H3)MCl2]2 (M = Ga 1, In 2), interesting group 13 organometallic crystalline dimers, characterized by elemental analyses, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Reaction of (2,6-dimesitylphenyl)boron dibromide, (Mes2C6H3)BBr2. I, with [2,6-di-i-propylphenyl)amino[lithium, [(i-Pr2C6,H3)N(H)Li, affords 2,6-dimesitylphenyl](2,6-di-i-propylphenyl)amino]boron bromide, (Mes2C6H3)B(Br)N(H)[(i-Pr2C6H3)] II. II has been characterized by elemental analyses, 1H and 13C NMR, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. ab initio examination of model molecules CH3BBr2, III, and CH3B(Br)NH2, IV, supports a measure of π-bonding in the B‒Br and B‒N bonds in III and IV.

Reaction of [(2,4,6-Pri3C6H2)2C 6H3]GaCl2 with P(SiMe3)3 affords the unusual organometallic compound [(2,4,6-Pri3C6H2)2C 6H3]Ga{H2PGa(H)PH2}G a[C6H3(C6H2- Pri3-2,4,6)2] 1 characterized by multinuclear NMR, complete (C, H, Ga and P) elemental analyses, IR spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction; 1 is significant as it contains a rare Ga–Ga–Ga [2.5145(13) and 2.7778(14) A] linkage even as its formation is facilitated by the unusual stripping of the sterically demanding m-terphenyl ligand from the central gallium atom.
