A polymer-stabilised cholesteric liquid crystal (PSChLC) was fabricated by ultraviolet (UV) induced polymerisation of photopolymerisable acrylate monomers mixed in a cholesteric liquid crystal (ChLC). A polymer network with a concentration gradient, which was induced by UV light absorption of dye along the propagation direction, was formed. A hydrogen bond, arising between the polymer network with a concentration gradient containing carboxyl as proton donors and chiral dopant (CD) as proton acceptors, induced a pitch gradient in PSChLC and then, as a consequence, broadband reflection. The broadband reflection is associated with the concentration and the composition of photopolymerisable acrylate monomers, the concentration of CD and the polymerisation temperature. Examining the morphologies of the polymer network by scanning electron microscopy, the helix structure and pitch gradient were verified, confirming the pitch gradient of the PSChLC and revealing the essence of the formation of broadband reflection.

A series of cyclic siloxane tetramers covering the whole composition range were synthesised using cyclotetrasiloxane, cholestryl-4-allyloxy-benzoate and biphenyl-4-yl 4-allyloxybenzoate, and the effects of the cholesteryl-based mesogenic units on liquid crystalline and thermo-optical properties were studied. The presence of a cholesteric mesogen was observed to widen the mesogenic temperature range and tended to induce smectic A phases in the tetramers containing a higher mole fraction of cholestryl-4-allyloxy-benzoate (X chol). The selective reflection of cholesteric tetramers shifted to shorter wavelengths with increasing X chol and temperature. Blue phases can be easily observed for those tetramers containing more than 50.0 mol% cholesteric mesogen. The shorter pitch sample showed the wider blue phases range. The blue phases range width increased from 2.8°C to 18.5°C as X chol increased from 0.5 to 1.0.

An unsticking technique was applied for the fabrication of a polymer-stabilised cholesteric liquid crystal (PSCLC) cell. The template of polymer matrix in the planarly aligned cholesteric liquid crystal (Ch-LC) was perfectly preserved by lifting off the hydrophilic antisticking substrate. The desired PSCLC cell could then be obtained by injecting a third Ch-LC sample between two designed templates of PSCLC layer. By adjusting the pitch distribution in the two stacking templates, a reflectivity of nearly 50% incident light could be yielded and the bandwidth of the reflection spectrum could be controlled accurately in the PSCLC cell. Thus, a method to modulate the wide-band reflection of 50% visible light flux range was offered.

Study of selectively reflecting characteristics of polymer stabilised chiral nematic liquid crystal films with a temperature-dependent pitch length

Xiaotao Yuan; Lipei Zhang; Huai Yang

Chiral propane-1,2-di-(4-(4-heptylcyclohexyl)benzoate) (PPCB) and 1-phenylethane-1,2-di-(4-(4-heptylcyclohexyl) benzoate) (PEPB) were synthesised and used as chiral dopants to induce chiral nematic liquid crystals (N*-LCs). Since the helical twisting power of the former first decreased and then increased as a result of thermally induced inversion helicity sense, and those of the latter changed little with increasing temperature, the pitch lengths of the N*-LCs prepared from (N-LC)/PPCB/(R)-PEPB and N-LC/PPCB/(S)-PEPB mixtures decreased and increased with increasing temperature respectively. Then, based on these two kinds of N*-LCs, polymer stabilised liquid crystal films were obtained, in which the bandwidth of the selective reflection spectra increased with increasing temperature.

Synthesis and phase behaviour of hydrogen‐bonded liquid crystalline complexes of allyloxybenzoic acid compounds with 4,4′‐bipyridine

Qiang Wei; Lin Shi; Xiaotao Yuan; Lipei Zhang; Hui Cao; Huai Yang

Three kinds of benzoic acid compounds were synthesized and characterized; the corresponding symmetric hydrogen‐bonded liquid crystalline complexes based on these benzoic acid compounds and 4,4′‐bipyridine (BPy) were then prepared. The existence of the hydrogen bonds was verified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The liquid crystalline properties of the complexes were demonstrated by polarizing microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. 4‐Allyloxy‐2‐fluorobenzoic acid and two fluorinated hydrogen‐bonded complexes exhibited only nematic phases, whereas the non‐fluorinated complex showed both smectic and nematic phases. The clearing points and mesophase thermal range of the complexes decreased with increasing number of lateral fluorine atoms on the rigid core.

Synthesis and Mesomorphic Properties of Two Series of Laterally Fluorinated Symmetric Ester Liquid Crystals

Qiang Wei; Xiaotao Yuan; Lipei Zhang; Liping Wang; Huai Yang; Yangbin Wang

Two series of symmetric ester liquid crystals (nAFBHQ and nADFBHQ) with lateral fluorine atoms have been synthesized. Their chemical structures were measured by FTIR, 1H NMR, and elemental analysis (EA). Their mesomorphic properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarizing optical microscopy (POM). It was found that both series showed nematic phase only. And their melting point and clearing point decreased with the number of carbon atoms in alkoxy group. It can also be found that nAFBHQ have approximately the same temperatures of melting point but much higher temperatures of clearing point than their corresponding compound in nADFBHQ series.

Abstract Three kinds of fluorinated Schiffs base esters, 4-allyloxy-2-X-6-X-benzoic acid 4-[(2, 3, 4-trifluorophenylimino)-methyl]phenyl ester, where X=H or F, were synthesized and characterized. Their chemical structures were identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR). Their mesomorphic properties were studied by polarized optical microscopy (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found that all the three compounds exhibited enantiotropic nematic phases only. And their clearing point temperature and thermal range of mesophase decreased with the number of fluorine atoms on the rigid core of the compounds; while their melting point temperature showed no distinct regularity.
