Modeling and Experimental Investigation of Laser Drilling with Jet Electrochemical Machining

Zhang Hua; Xu Jiawen

Abstract As two kinds of defects, recast layers and spatters, commonly accompanied by laser-drilled holes always prevent the laser drilling technique from extending its applications in aerospace and aircraft industries, therefore, a novel hybrid process incorporating laser drilling with jet electrochemical machining (JECM-LD) has been developed to solve these problems as well as improve the overall quality of laser-drilled holes. It is executed by directing an electrolyte jet coaxially aligned with a laser beam onto the workpiece surface. During the process, the electrolyte jet produces electrochemical reaction with the surface material, effective cooling of it and carries away the process scraps. A two-dimensional mathematical model is proposed to describe the shape of the holes machined by JECM-LD. The model is verified through comparison between the results from simulation and those from experiments conducted on the test pieces made of 321 stainless steel 0.5 mm thick processed by the pulsed Nd:YAG laser at second harmonic wavelength. An examination of the experimental results under an optical microscope discovers that, by contrast with the laser drilling in air, the JECM-LD has effectively removed the recast layers and spatters, but its efficiency dropped by about 30%.

Aviation-oriented Micromachining Technology—Micro-ECM in Pure Water

Bao Huaiqian; Xu Jiawen; Li Ying

Abstract This article proposes a precise and ecofriendly micromachining technology for aerospace application called electrochemical machining in pure water (PW-ECM). On the basis of the principles of water dissociation, a series of test setups and tests are devised and performed under different conditions. These tests explain the need for technological conditions realizing PW-ECM, and further explore the technological principles. The results from the tests demonstrate a successful removal of electrolytic slime by means of ultrasonic vibration of the workpiece. To ensure the stability and reliability of PW-ECM process, a new combined machining method of PW-ECM assisted with ultrasonic vibration (PW-ECM/USV) is devised. Trilateral and square cavities and holes as well as a group of English alphabets are worked out on a stainless steel plate. It is confirmed that PW-ECM will be probably an efficient new aviation precision machining method.

Experimental Research on the Ground Surface Quality of Creep Feed Ultrasonic Grinding Ceramics (Al2O3)

Jian-xin Zheng; Xu Jiawen

Abstract In order to grind the ceramic blade surface with the Numerical Control contour evolution ultrasonic grinding method using the simple shape grinding wheel, primary comparative experiments of creep feed grinding with and without ultrasonic vibration were carried out to grind Al 2 O 3 ceramics so as to implore the effects of different process parameters on the machined surface quality. It can be concluded that when the direction of ultrasonic vibration is parallel to the direction of creep feed, the value of the surface roughness will be decreased; otherwise the surface quality will become worse. With the ultrasonic grinding method, the slower feed-rate, the smaller grinding depth, the higher grinding speed and the compound feed grinding method should be applied in order to improve the surface quality. The creep feed grinding mechanisms with and without ultrasonic vibration were analyzed theoretically from the experimental results. With the selected grinding parameters resulted from the experiments, the feasibility experiment of ultrasonic grinding ceramic blade surface was carried out.
