Abstract A new BGO crystal with higher radiation hardness was successfully developed in the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Academia Sinica. As compared with the normal BGO crystal, the new crystal possesses less radiation damage and faster recovery after 1000–10 000 rad 60 Co γ-ray radiation, but with no large change on the light output, energy resolution, transmission and optical uniformity properties.
