Abstract The paper describes the feasibility and method of the application of virtual reality technology to the grinding process, and introduces the modeling method of object entity in the environment of virtual reality. The simulation process of grinding wheels and ground surface roughness is discussed, and the computation program system of numerical simulation is compiled with Visual C++ programming language. At the same time, three-dimensional simulation models of grinding wheels and ground surface roughness are made with OpenGL tool. The choice of grinding wheels, the forecast of ground surface quality and some simulation results can be realized by interactively inputting grinding parameters.

Abstract The friction between the abrasive grains and workpiece is a crutial factor determining the main grinding output. Few studies have been carried out investigating the values of the friction coefficient in grinding, due to the difficulty of direct measurement. In this paper, a mathematical model of the friction coefficient in grinding has been established with the aid of a new grinding parameter C ge . Heavy grinding with different wheels and also single-grit grinding tests have been conducted for various work materials. The friction coefficients under different grinding conditions have been obtained using the model and the experimental results. The effects of grinding speed, wheel and work material on the friction coefficient have been discussed.

ABSTRACT This article proposed for the first time the method of the low-speed wire electrical discharge turning (LS-WEDT) combined with the multiple cutting strategy to fabricate carbon steel micro-rods. First, the rotating apparatus submerged in working fluid is designed and manufactured to enable the low-speed wire electrical discharge machine to generate cylindrical geometries. Besides, material removal rate, surface roughness, and machining precision of the micro-rod manufactured by the LS-WEDT are, respectively, investigated. Moreover, the surface microstructure and surface chemical reaction of micro-rods are characterized using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy analysis. Experimental results display that the micro-rod of 70 µm diameter and 1000 µm length can be successfully fabricated. More importantly, the mean absolute diameter deviation of the micro-rod fabricated by LS-WEDT is 0.65 µm and the surface roughness is 0.53 µm, which identified the high machining precision and good surface quality of the micro-rod.
