Institute of Marine Science and Technology (IMST) has conducted “Meteo – oceanographic Surveys” at Kucukcekmece, Tuzla, Buyukada, Kucuksu, Baltalimani, Pasabahce and Buyukdere marine outfall regions. The latter four of these locations are located along the Bosphorus. In the meantime, IMST has also carried out the marine surveys foreseen within the scope of “Feasibility Studies and Preliminary Designs of Bosphorus Railroad Tunnel and Istanbul Metro System Project”. As a result of this overlap, probably the most extensive data base of the long term current and sea level measurements has been created. This paper outlines the program and the methodology of the surveys and explains some features of the data evaluation.

The St. Venant equations which are written for the calculation of free surface, gradually varied unsteady flows can only be solved analytically in very special limited problems. Apart from this they can be solved by numerical solution methods. Depending on the problem’s characteristics, St. Venant equations can be arranged in different forms such as kinematic wave, dynamic wave, gravity wave, quasi-steady dynamic wave, and non-inertia wave may emerge. In the solution of non-linear St. Venant equations, different numerical solution techniques may be used by linearization of the equations by mathematical approaches. In this study the St. Venant equations made linear have been solved by using the Differential Quadrature Method (DQM), and the results have been compared by the Finite Difference Method (FDM) and Finite Volume Method’s (FVM) results.

Cage fish farming is one of the fastest growing food industries, both worldwide and in Turkey. There are growing concerns about the manner of resolving the competing claims for the use of limited coastline and water body space. Matters connected with the siting of fish farming increase the need for the integrated coastal zone planning of aquaculture. This should be undertaken in collusion with other coastal stakeholders and with the cooperation of the government ministries that promote and regulate aquaculture development. In this study the integration and coexistence of fish farms is evaluated in the context of other activities in Izmir Bay. This study shows how different terrestrial and marine activities interact with each other, and that certain areas are subject to layers of multiple usages. One of the major sea users of the Bay, for example, is the fishery sector, which utilizes 850.4 km2 of a total surface area of Izmirs Bay of 960.4 km2. This overlaps with the 113.4 km2 that are used by marine transportation. Military zones encompass 63.1 km2 and fish farming utilizes only 1.23 km2. This study uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to build a spatial database that analyzes conflicting claims for integrating fish farming with other claimants. Clearly planned and properly managed fish farming development should be undertaken within a broader framework of integrated coastal zone management.

This study discussed conflicts in a large-scale development project realized in an archaeological area. The dam reservoir of Yortanli constructed as a part of a contemporary irrigation project in Western Turkey conflicted with the antique settlement of Allianoi, which had developed in the same area around a natural thermal spring in the 2nd century ad. The aim was to present the protection decisions and implementations related with the archaeological site of Allianoi in the Yortanlı Dam Reservoir so that monitoring and criticism of its consequences can be possible in the future. The tools of the three disciplines, hydraulic engineering, structural engineering and conservation, were emphasized. The following conclusions were derived: The understanding of the protection-development conflict of archaeological heritage-dam relations in the case of Allianoi-Yortanlı necessitates the evaluation of its legal, administrative, technical, and managerial aspects with all related governmental and non-governmental parts. The presented evaluation provides an opportunity for the discussion of the validity of the protection intervention, which is reburial of the remains prior to water retention in the dam, within an international framework. The presentation of the details of the protection process may facilitate the monitoring and criticism of its consequences in the future.

Study of the effects of fixed obstacles on incident waves can give considerable insight into the design of offshore structures. With certain assumptions simplifying the phenomena, motions caused by incident waves around the obstacles can be defined as a velocity potential, but this approach may be analytically very complex. Velocity potential around the obstacle can also be numerically determined by means of finite difference methods which are considerably simpler than the analytical techniques.
