A proposal for broadband wavelength conversion using four-wave mixing is presented based on a slot waveguide with silicon nanocrystals (Si-ncs) as the optical nonlinear material. The dispersion of the waveguide is engineered to realize a flat dispersion as well as a small effective mode area for better nonlinear interaction by optimizing the waveguide dimensions. The conversion performance is synthetically analyzed and numerical results show that a bandwidth of over 400 nm and an efficiency of -2.38 dB can be achieved using a pump power of 150 mW in a 4 mm long Si-nc slot waveguide with slot width of 50 nm, slab width of 310 nm, and height of 305 nm.

We report an all-optical multiple-channel exclusive OR (XOR) gate for 10 Gbits/s non-return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying (NRZ-DPSK) signals using nondegenerate four-wave mixing in a silicon waveguide. The function of the logic XOR gate is experimentally demonstrated using 40 bit DPSK sequences. Also, the eye diagram of the XOR signal is clearly observed as the incident signals are both modulated by DPSK sequences originating from 2(31)-1 pseudorandom binary sequences.

We report all-optical wavelength conversion and multicasting for a 20 Gb/s (2×10 Gb/s) polarization-multiplexed (Pol-MUX) nonreturn-to-zero amplitude-shift keying signal using four-wave mixing (FWM) in a silicon waveguide. The temporal waveforms and eye diagrams demodulated from both polarization channels of the converted idler are clearly observed. Moreover, the wavelength multicasting of the Pol-MUX signal is also demonstrated by using two incident pumps.

A reconfigurable dual-channel all-optical logic gate is proposed and experimentally demonstrated using four-wave mixing in a silicon waveguide for polarization encoding signals. Six logic functions, XNOR, AND, NOR, XOR, AB¯, and A¯B are implemented at two different wavelength channels by adjusting the polarization states of two 10 Gb/s non-return-to-zero polarization-shift keying (NRZ-PolSK) signals modulated by 10-bit on-off keying (OOK) sequences. The eye diagrams of the logic signals are clearly observed, and the logic functions are well demonstrated as the two incident NRZ-PolSK signals are both modulated by the OOK sequences, which originate from 2(31)-1 pseudo-random binary sequences.

In this paper, we report a scheme to achieve an all-optical multiple-function logic unit including OR and AND gates for 10 Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero on-off-keying (NRZ-OOK) signals based on four-wave mixing in a silicon waveguide. The functions of the logic OR and AND gates are demonstrated simultaneously using 10-bit OOK sequences. The eye diagrams of the OR and AND signals are realized experimentally as the incident signals are both modulated by OOK sequences originating from 2 31 -1 pseudorandom binary

We demonstrate an all-optical, error-free time-division demultiplexing for NRZ-ASK signal with NRZ-to-RZ format conversion using four-wave mixing in a silicon-on-insulator waveguide. Different demultiplexing channel bit rates are verified by adopting different pump clocks.

A broadband polarization-insensitive wavelength conversion is presented based on four-wave mixing in a silicon-on-insulator waveguide by optimizing the pump polarization angle and the waveguide geometries. A 1-dB polarization-insensitive bandwidth of 400 nm is achieved.

All-optical clock recovery is demonstrated for non-return-to-zero amplitude-shift-keying (NRZ-ASK) signals with various bit-rates using a passive asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer (AMI) assisted mode-locked fiber laser. It is available for the bit-rates range from 2.5 to 7.5 Gb/s.
