Methacrolein is an important intermediate in the synthesis of methyl methacrylate (MMA), which is widely used for producing acrylic plastics or producing polymer dispersions for paints and coatings. In this paper, methacrolein was synthesized by condensation of propionaldehyde with formaldehyde in the pressense of amine salt through Mannich base intermediate at the atmospheric pressure. The optimal reaction conditions were obtained. The water content in starting mixture were also investigated

Synthesis of 2-Nitrobenzaldehyde in the Presence of Ionic Liquids

Rui Yi Yan; Pu Yang; Zeng Xi Li; Hui Wang; Yanyan Diao; Lei Wang; Suojiang Zhang

A method for synthesizing of 2-nitrobenzaldehyde from 2-nitrobenzyl alcohol using ionic liquids (ILs) has been developed. The conversion of 2-nitrobenzyl alcohol and the selectivity of 2-nitrobenzaldehyde in the ionic liquids are higher than those in the traditional dichlorethane solvent. In addition, a reaction mechanism for the oxidation of 2-nitrobenzyl alcohol to 2-nitrobenzaldehyde is proposed.

Cs-Zr-Mg/SiO2 can be effective catalysts for the production of methyl methacrylate (MMA) by the condensation of methyl propionate (MP) and formaldehyde (FA). The catalysts with different magnesium loading were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation. The number and strength of surface acid and base sites of catalysts were determined by stepwise temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) of NH3 and CO2, respectively. It was found that the catalyst with a magnesium loading of 1.0 g/100molSiO2 had the modest acidity and basicity and showed the excellent performance. Furthermore, it was also observed that the activity of the catalyst decreased with reaction time, and coke formed on the catalyst was characterized by DTA/TG technique after reaction.
