ABSTRACT The aims of this study were to determine the adaptability of giant king grass ( Pennisetum hybridum ) under Mediterranean climate conditions, and also to determine whether proper plant densities could improve growth and yield. Study site was located at Bornova, Turkey (38°27.236 N, 27°13.576 E and 20 m). Treatment consisted of four densities of plant population (D 1 :57,143; D 2 :28,571; D 3 :19,048 and D 4 :14,286 plant ha -1 ) with three replicates per treatment in a randomized block design. Setts were planted in mid June of 2010 and allowed to grow for 4 full growing seasons. Average result of four years indicated that there were significant effects of plant densities on the dry matter yield and other yield characteristics of giant king grass but not on silage pH. It was recommended that the production of giant king grass using D 2 (70x50 cm) was the most successful planting density regarding the dry matter (32.6 t ha -1 ) and crude protein yield to the regions with Mediterranean-type climates under irrigation . Key words: G iant king grass, plant density, dry matter yield, silage quality.

ABSTRACT A field trial was conducted at the experimental fields of Ege University in Bornova and Odemis in 2006 and 2007. The effects of two soil textures (heavy and light) and four cultivars (TT-2008, TT-2009, P-5683 and Elci) on the yield and chemical compositions of some alfalfa cultivars were evaluated under the Mediterranean climatic conditions. The experimental design was a Randomized Complete Blocks with four replications. Results indicated that, the effects of soil texture on yield and quality traits of crop material were significant. TT-2008 and P-5683 alfalfa cultivars had better performances than the other cultivars with regard to yield (fresh herbage, dry matter and crude protein) and quality (contents of dry matter, crude protein, crude ash, ADF and NDF values) characteristics. The overall mean of alfalfa yield at light textured soil condition was significantly higher as compared to the heavy textured soil. Key Words: Alfalfa, Soil texture, Cultivars, Yield, Quality characteristics.

This study was conducted in order to determine the effect of different previous crops and sowing dates on the grain yield and some other yield components of corn under typical Mediterranean climatic conditions during summer period of 2013 and 2014. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design in the form of randomized complete blocks with three replications. The main plots were allocated to three sowing dates (Early Spring, Mid Spring and Late Spring) and sub-plots to previous crops (Vicia sativa, Vicia villosa, Lathyrus sativus, Trifolium resupinatum and Pisum arvense) and three different controls without previous crop (control-1: 100 kg ha-1 N; control-2: 200 kg ha-1 N and control-3: 0 kg ha-1 N). Corn grain yield, yield components (number of ears per plant, number of seeds per ear, ear length, ear diameter, 1000-grain weight) and plant height were assessed. The results showed that late planting date had a significantly negative effect on tested traits and second planting date (mid- spring) produced higher corn grain yield compared to the other dates. The highest corn grain yield (11011 kg ha-1) also occurred in control-2 (200 kg ha-1 N without previous crop) treatment and was significantly different from the other previous crop treatments with 100 kg ha-1 N and controls except Vicia villosa as previous legume crop of which corn grain yield was comparable with it.

B u calisma Ege Universitesi Ziraat Fakultesi Tarla Bitkileri Bolumu ve Odemis Meslek Yuksekokulu’nun deneme tarlalarinda 2005 ve 2006 yillarinda, ana urun yetistirme sezonunda yurutulmustur. Denemede, misir bitkisinin CT-1, Helen, C-955, Brasco cesitleri kullanilmis ve bu cesitlerin iki farkli toprak yapisina sahip lokasyonlarda gostermis olduklari silaj kalite ozellikleri (silaj kaybi, silaj kuru madde orani, silaj pH’si, Flieg puani, renk, koku, struktur ve DLG puani) incelenmistir. Arastirma sonuclari, genel olarak silaj kalitesi bakimindan lokasyonlar ve misir cesitleri arasinda onemli farkliliklar bulunmadigini gostermistir
