Wave ripple dynamics and the combined-flow modification of wave ripples in the intertidal zone of Ariake Bay (Kyushu, Japan)

Abstract Intertidal sand bars occur as rhythmic features on the mesotidal foreshore in Ariake Bay in Kyushu, southern Japan. Superimposed on the low-gradient foreshore (2:1000) are seventeen low amplitude ( Many wave ripples are constructed on the intertidal rhythmic bars by wind-waves during high tide. The crest line of the wave ripples is long, parallel and straight to gently curved with bifurcation, but often oblique to the crest of these rhythmic bars. Peaked crests of wave ripples on the gentle seaward slope of the bars are modified by combined flow of borelike waves and the return flow just before emergence, and become rounded or flattened. In contrast, wave ripples on the landward slope are only slightly deformed through this process. As the result, the form of the wave ripples is diagnostic of the position on the rhythmic bars. This difference in form is important as a criterion for discriminating the landward and seaward directions for such intertidal deposits.

1998年8月26日から30日にかけて, 栃木県と茨城県の那珂川上流域は激しい集中豪雨に見舞われ, 那須地域の余笹川では総雨量1200mmを越えて流域や河床の状態は一変した. さらに, 水戸市周辺の那珂川本・支流はその17時間後に水位が上昇し, 12年振りに氾濫した.この洪水のようすはテレビ・新聞によって, 詳しく報道された. 水戸北方の那珂川は自然堤防帯の様相を示し, 砂礫質の蛇行州が形成されている. 那珂川の砂礫堆積物はこのような水位上昇期のみに運搬・堆積が行われる. 今回の洪水によって, 蛇行州周辺で特に堆積作用が進み, 微地形の変化や運搬された砕屑物の性質や厚さなどが観察できる.ここでは, 水戸市国田の蛇行州にみられる微地形および堆積物の状況を写真で示す. 洪水による被害状況は, 多くの機関によって調査されており, 緊急調査報告書が茨城大学工学部システム工学科・広域水圏環境科学教育研究センターから発行されている.
