Abstract The total synthesis of (±)-pinguisone and (±)-deoxopinguisone, the unusual [5–6], fused-ring sesquiterpenes, was accomplished by the photochemical transformation of the bicyclo [3.2.2]non-6-en-2-one into the bicyclo [4.3.0]non-4-en-7-one.

Abstract A triquinane having the structure proposed for senoxydene has been synthesized in a regio and stereoselective manner. However, the difference in their spectral data suggests that the structure of the natural senoxydene is incorrect and requires revision.

Total synthesis of (±)-ptilocaulin starting from tropolone

A rearrangement approach to the antitumour antibiotic (±)-ptilicaulin was accomplished by photochemical [1,3]-acyl migration of 1-butyl-exo-8-methylbicyclo[3.2.2]non-6-en-2-one, derived from 1-methoxy-exo-3-methylbicyclo[3.2.2]non-6-en-2-one via the pinacol-type rearrangement, to give the [5–6] fusedring skeleton.
