Abstract Background: A recurrence of bladder tumors following surgery for transitional cell carcinoma of the upper urinary tract is not rarely observed. A prospective randomized study was conducted to examine the significance of prophylactic intravesical instillation of mitomycin C (MMC) and cytosine arabinoside (Ara‐C) to prevent recurrent bladder tumors after surgery for superficial transitional cell carcinoma of the upper urinary tract.

Urolithiasis composed of 2,8-dihydroxyadenine is not only formed in a complete defect of adenine phosphoribosyltransferase, but also in a partial deficiency of this enzyme. To our knowledge these cases reported in this paper are the third and fourth cases of dihydroxyadenine urinary calculi in patients with partial deficiency of adenine phosphoribosyltransferase.

New procedures for tubeless cutaneous ureterostomy are described. The fundamental principles of the methods are 1) an everted ureteral nipple formation combined with a triangular skin flap as a permanent stoma and 2) a 2-stage operation to obtain a viable ureteral nipple against slough and retraction.

Abstract XX/XY chromosomal mosaicism, except for hermaphroditism, is seen rarely with hypospadias. To our knowledge this is the first case of XX/XY mosaicism presenting a chordee without hypospadias associated with scrotal transposition.

During a 3-year period, 41 patients with primary bladder carcinoma were treated with cystectomy along with pelvic lymphadenectomy. Although lymphadenectomy was useful for more accurate staging in patients with T2 or more invasive disease, it contributed little to the surgical curability of the disease, irrespective of extensive nodal dissection in the pelvis. Based on the characteristic lymphatic spread of the disease, limited dissection to the regional nodal area seemed to be satisfactory in the surgical management of bladder carcinoma.
