An expert system for a water purification control system that performs supervisory control of water quantity and automatic filter base in control based on knowledge has been developed. In this knowledge-based water purification control system, the expert system is incorporated into the supervisory control section. This knowledge-based water purification control system has been in online operation at a plant with a 544000-m/sup 3//day supply capacity since October, 1986. The configuration of the knowledge-based purification control system and the operation results are discussed.<<ETX>>

A knowledge-based control system has been developed and applied to a water purification plant. The objective of the system is to realize an intelligent supervisory control system that is based on the accumulated knowledge of experts. This control system employs a production system as an expert system. “Knowledge” required for operating the plant is represented by IF-THEN rules. In order for such an expert system to operate in real time, an on-line interface and environment are required. This paper describes the configuration of the knowledge-based water purification plant control system and results of numerical simulation and on-line operation.

ABSTRACT A newly developed water quantity total control system for largescale water purification plants with digital computers is described. The system characterizes an optimal planning method and monitor-control algorithm. This total control system can minimize change of a filter load and also can take account of water intake right and prevention from useless circulating flow. An example of digital simulation results shows the possibility of this control system.
