Synthesis and Photoluminescence Properties of InVO4:Eu3+ Phosphors Synthesized Using Sol-Gel Method

Indium orthovanadate, InVO4, doped with Eu ions were synthesized using sol-gel method. The precursor of InVO4:Eu powders were heated at 950°C for 10 hr in air, and the crystal structure, surface morphologies, and the photoluminescence properties were also examined. XRD results indicate that the crystallinity of InVO4:Eu powders decrease with increasing the Eu ion concentrations. From the SEM photographs, the shapes of the InVO4 particles are uniform and like the pebbles. With increasing the Eu ion concentrations, the shapes of the InVO4:Eu particles become small and irregular. In the PL studies, the sharp excitation peaks between 300 and 600 nm correspond to the Eu intra-4f transitions. Excitation at 327 nm in terms of Eu concentrations in (In1-xEux)VO4 powders shows that the (In1-xEux)VO4 phosphors display bright red luminescence at about 615 nm belonging to the D0→F2 electric dipole transition, and the time-resolved D0→F2 transition presents a single exponential decay behavior. The saturation of emission intensity excited by intra-4f transitions occurs at a concentration of x = 0.3, indicating that the concentration quenching is active when the x > 0.3. 217th ECS Meeting, Abstract #1100,
