E–ε Model of Spray-Laden Near-Sea Atmospheric Layer in High Wind Conditions

Yevgenii Rastigejev; Sergey A. Suslov

AbstractIn-depth understanding and accurate modeling of the interaction between ocean spray and a turbulent flow under high wind conditions is essential for improving the intensity forecasts of hurricanes and severe storms. Here, the authors consider the E–e closure for a turbulent flow model that accounts for the effects of the variation of turbulent energy and turbulent mixing length caused by spray stratification. The obtained analytical and numerical solutions show significant differences between the current E–e model and the lower-order turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) model considered previously. It is shown that the reduction of turbulent energy and mixing length above the wave crest level, where the spray droplets are generated, that is not accounted for by the TKE model results in a significant suppression of turbulent mixing in this near-wave layer. In turn, suppression of turbulence causes an acceleration of flow and a reduction of the drag coefficient that is qualitatively consistent with field ...

Two-Temperature Nonequilibrium Model of a Marine Boundary Layer Laden with Evaporating Ocean Spray under High-Wind Conditions

Yevgenii Rastigejev; Sergey A. Suslov

AbstractA nonequilibrium two-temperature multiphase model of the atmospheric boundary layer above wave crests that is laden with evaporating ocean spray in high-wind condition is presented. The governing equations are derived from basic physical principles of conservation of momentum, mass, and thermal energy in multiphase flows. The model derivation uses an Eulerian multifluid approach that considers spray as a continuous medium interacting with the gas phase. The E − e turbulence closure is used. The developed theoretical framework accounts for the nonuniform ocean spray distribution and the thermal energy exchange between air and spray droplets that, in general, have different temperatures above the wave crest level. Such thermodynamic nonequilibrium conditions are shown to exist when the spray concentration is relatively low and the air humidity is far from saturation. The mechanical and thermodynamic effects of the evaporating spray on airflow and heat transport characteristics are obtained and shown...

Tropical Storm Kyle (2002) and cold-air damming: their interactions and impacts on heavy rainfall in the Carolinas

Jose M. Garcia-Rivera; Yuh-Lang Lin; Yevgenii Rastigejev

The interactions between an Appalachian cold-air damming event and the near passage of Tropical Storm Kyle (2002) along the coastal Carolinas are assessed by using a numerical weather prediction model. As the storm moved along the coastline, it began extra-tropical transition, bringing heavy rains to both the coastal region and inland towards the Piedmont of North Carolina. Our goal is to quantify the effects of both interacting weather systems on heavy precipitation to improve the dynamical understanding of such effects, as well as precipitation forecasts in the study region. A series of sensitivity tests were performed to isolate and quantify the effects of both systems on the total accumulated precipitation. It was found that (a) for this type of along-coast track, the pre-existing cold-air damming played only a minor role on the total accumulated precipitation, (b) the outer circulation of Kyle weakened the cold-air damming due to a redirection of the mean flow away from the east side of the Appalachian Mountains, and (c) the combination of Kyle with a shortwave mid- to upper-level trough and a surface coastal front were responsible for the heavy precipitation experienced in the study area through the advection of moisture, vorticity, and the forcing of upward motion.
