BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Sulforaphane on ischemia/ reperfusion (IR) injury of the liver and distant organs resulting from liver blood flow arrest. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fourty Wistar rats were assigned into four groups, each included 10 rats were used. Group I as only laparatomy, Group II laparatomy and Sulforaphane application, Group III hepatic IR; and Group IV as hepatic IR and Sulforaphane application group. Animals were subjected to liver ischemia for 30 min and then reperfusion is started. 5 mg/kg Sulforaphane was applied via oral lavage 15 minutes before initiating the experimental study. Blood samples were taken from the animals for biochemical analysis at 60th minutes of the experiment in the first and second groups; 30 minutes after beginning reperfusion in the third and forth groups. Simultaneously, liver, lung and kidney tissues were sampled for biochemical and histopathological examinations. RESULTS The administration of sulforaphane significantly reduced the serum TOA and liver TOA levels, increased the serum TAC and liver TAC levels and also decreased The OSI and liver OSI levels. In the histopathologic examination, the injury was reduced by the administration of sulforaphane. Administration of sulforaphane did not lead to any significant changes in any parameter including histopathological parameters in both the kidney and the lung. CONCLUSIONS Sulforaphane reduced the liver oxidative stress from I/R injury. A histological injury in liver was reduced by sulforaphane administration. However, there were no significant effects of sulforaphane on the remote organ injuries induced by IR.

Objective: The aim of this study is to compare the results of four different surgical techniques used for pilonidal sinus. Methods: A total of 339 patients who underwent surgery for pilonidal sinus between Januray 2000 and April 2008 were evaluated prospectively. The patients were operated with one of four surgical techniques: excision and primary closure (n=76), excision and marcupialisation (n=112), excision without closure (n=104) and excision and Limberg flap (n=47) techniques. Postoperative complications (hematoma and infection) and recurrences in four groups were compared. Results: 286 male patients and 53 female patients were included in this study. Mean age of patients was 24.2 (1457) years. The mean follow up time was 41 months. The recurrence rates after excision and primary closure, excision and marcupialization, excision without closure and excision and Limberg flap were 18.4%, 13.4%, 9.6% and %4.3%, respectively. There were not significant differ ences in postoperative hematoma between four groups. The postoperative infection rate in patients treated with excision without closure was the lowest but time to return to work was highest in this group partients. Patients with infection had higher rates of recurrence than patients without infection.

Ischemia/reperfusion (IR) injury of the intestine is a major problem in abdominal pathological condition and is associated with a high morbidity and mortality. The purpose of the study is to investigate the effects of curcumin on the bacterial translocation incidence and inflammatory response in rats submitted to bowel ischemia reperfusion injury. Thirty-two Wistar albino rats with a weight of 200 to 250 g were used in the study. They were randomly divided into 3 groups (n = 10 for each group): sham only operated group(group I); IR group (group II); and IR + curcumin treatment group (group III). Curcumin (curcumin from Curcuma longa) 20 mg/kg/day was given orally to the curcumin group. All animals were given 109 E. Coli by orogastric intubation 12 hours before sampling. Seventy-two hours after the first operation, mesenteric lymph node and blood samples were obtained and cultured. Blood samples of 2 mL were obtained for a polymerase chain reaction study. A piece of terminal ileum was also sampled for hist...
