Changes in lonized and total calcium concentrations in serum and urine during open heart surgery

Abstract Using a calcium-specific electrode, the changes in serum calcium level during and after the perfusion in the cardiac surgery were followed. Changes in the total calcium were observed in the patients perfused with and without calcium gluconate in the initial prime solution and were parallel with those of total serum protein. The level of ionized calcium was kept unchanged in the patients perfused with calcium gluconate, even though the serum pH and the PTH level changed during the perfusion. The effect of body temperature on calcium level was not observed as checked under the conditions of hypothermia and normothermia. Large amounts of calcium and phosphate were excreted into the urine when diuretics were used, which might be a cause of hypocalcemia during perfusion.

Fourteen cases of left atrial myxoma with emphasis on related histology

With the availability of diagnostic ultrasonic equipment, there is an increase in the number of diagnosed cases of left atrial myxoma. Fourteen such patients underwent surgical treatment. One major concern was the possible recurrence of the tumor. Histologic examination revealed that the tumor cells did not invade the muscular layer beyond, the layer of elastic fiber adjacent to the endocardium, in all cases. We remove the stalk with theFossa Ovale when the tumor grown on theFossa Ovale. When the tumor is attached to the muscular septum or free wall, we remove the stalk with the endocardium and a part of the adjacent myocardial layer. The total resection of the muscular septum may not be necessary as far as the myxoma is concerned.
