The Steering system is the most important system for a vehicle, in terms of safety and driving feel. But in many cases, experiments to improve the steering feel using a real vehicle are very difficult in the aspects of repeatability, safety and money. Repeatability in testing steering systems is very important because the steering feel for a driver varies according to the environmental conditions. In addition to that, steering tests using vehicle are so dangerous that the driver might not concentrate on the tests. In this paper, a new steering system simulator using the front part of a steering and suspension system is described. This simulator allows cheap, safe, and repeatable testing of the steering system compared with the real vehicle test.

This paper proposes an optimal design scheme to reduce the noise of the engine cooling fan by adapting Kriging with two meta-heuristic techniques. An engineering model has been developed for the prediction of the noise spectrum of the engine cooling fan. The noise of the fan is expressed as the discrete frequency noise peaks at the BPF and its harmonics and line spectrum at the broad band by noise generation mechanisms. The object of this paper is to find the optimal design for noise reduction of the engine cooling fan. We firstly show a comparison of the measured and calculated noise spectra of the fan for the validation of the noise prediction program. Orthogonal array is applied as design of experiments because it is suitable for Kriging. With these simulated data, we can estimate a correlation parameter of Kriging by solving the nonlinear problem with genetic algorithm and find an optimal level for the noise reduction of the cooling fan by optimizing Kriging estimates with simulated annealing. We notice that this optimal design scheme gives noticeable results. Therefore, an optimal design for the cooling fan is proposed by reducing the noise of its system.

A two-degree-of-freedom out-of-plane model with contact stiffness is presented to describe dynamical interaction between the pad and disc of a disc brake system. It is assumed that the out-of-plane motion of the system depends on the friction force acting along the in-plane direction. Dynamic friction coefficient is modelled as a function of both in-plane relative velocity and out-of-plane normal force. When the friction coefficient depends only on the relative velocity, the contact stiffness has the role of negative stiffness. The results of stability analysis show that the stiffness of both pad and disc is equally important. Complex eigen value analysis is conducted for the case that the friction coefficient is also dependent on the normal force. The results further verify the importance of the stiffness. It has also been found that increasing the gradient of friction coefficient with respect to the normal force makes the system more unstable.

Recently, regulations of the government and concerns of people give rise to the interest in exhaust and intake noise of passenger car as much as other vehicles. In these demands, performance prediction software with hybrid method was developed at first. Secondly, robust design was used for improving the noise reduction capacity of intake system with the performance prediction software. On the basis of the existing design, length and radios of each component that was thought to effect on the capacity of intake system was selected. The factors were arranged by using L18 table of orthogonal array and optimum value was obtained.
