In this paper, we propose an authoring/editing framework for haptic broadcasting that provides viewers with passive haptic interactions synchronized with audiovisual media by extending MPEG-4 BIFS (binary format for scenes). Based on this framework, we could conveniently author haptically enhanced broadcast contents and provide them to viewers by streaming via a VOD (video on demand) context. This work will also appear in the demonstration session during the conference

This paper addresses a new design and control of a wearable 3DOF force feedback device based on wire-driven parallel mechanisms. Unlike the existing wearable force feedback devices, the proposed wire-driven device is not supported by a rigid frame attached to the upper body. All electrical components of the device are located inside a wearable jacket and the device is powered by a few batteries. The force applied to the end-effector is produced by the tension of three wires connected to it and the tension of the wires are controlled by three motors. The kinematics and workspace analysis are discussed and a simple algorithm that makes a wire maintain minimum tension while without making it slack is proposed. Also end-effector position errors caused by the flexible positions of wire extracting points are discussed. Finally, some empirical results are presented. This device may be used in some applications which need force feedback functions, especially with mobile computer devices such as mobile phones, computers and PDAs

Haptics has been studied as a means of providing users with a natural and immersive tactile sensation in real, augmented, and virtual environments in the various areas. However, in spite of the considerable advantages offered by haptic technology, it is still relatively unfamiliar to the general public. One of reasons for this unfamiliarity is the lack of abundant haptic interaction contents, especially in areas that are very close to the general public. Even though there are a few modeling tools for creating haptic contents, addition of haptic data to graphic models or scenes is limited and many haptic modeling processes have to be done mostly manually, which is time consuming and is not intuitive. For this reason, a new, intuitive, comprehensive, and efficient haptic modeling system is needed. This paper tries to define haptic modeling processes and its scopes and proposes a basic framework for a haptic modeling system (K-HapticModelerTM) that can create and edit haptic contents easily and intuitively for any virtual objects or graphic scenes.
