Knowledge Complexity, Learning Capability and Joint Venture Instability

Zijie Li; Jianfeng Wu; Yonggui Wang; Ming Cai

This paper applies game theory to analyze the dynamics of a joint venture. In particular, this study argues that knowledge complexity and learning capability are critical factors in determining bargaining power of both partners. Change of bargaining power breaks the balance and causes instability of a joint venture (rearrangement of control). In order to improve the stability of a joint venture, both sides need to protect their knowledge effectively, or to increase their learning capability continuously. Government as a third party of this game can also impose an important impact on stability of such partnership.

Jianfeng Wu; Min Liu; Yonggui Wang; Zijie Li

This paper applies the legitimacy perspective to examine the financing of technological start-ups in a transitional economy. In particular, this study identifies five key factors that help technological start-ups build up their legitimacy: R&D investment, conformity to ISO9000, affiliation with research institutions, state-owned enterprise, and firm size. Empirical findings from 11,154 new technological ventures in the Zhongguancun Science Park show that investment in R&D, conformity to ISO9000, and large firm scale improve a focal firms capability in absorbing external debt and research funds. This study contributes to the legitimacy literature and extends the understanding about the financing of technological start-ups in emerging economies.

The influence of collaborative governance mechanisms on innovation capabilities of service outsourcing enterprises: An empirical study in China

Wenxia Liu; Yonggui Wang

Based on the service outsourcing circumstances, we divided the cooperative governance mechanism of the service outsourcing enterprises to contractual governance mechanism and relational governance mechanism. We also analyze and reveal two governance mechanism how to influence innovation ability of service outsourcing supplier. To verify our hypothesis we obtain data of 177 samples through the questionnaire. Based on the data, we found that the contractual governance mechanism and the relational governance mechanism have different effect on innovation capability of service outsourcing enterprises. Our research also showed that relational governance mechanism has stronger impact on innovation capability than contractual governance mechanism. Knowledge acquisition and knowledge sharing in the relational governance mechanism and contractual governance mechanisms play an intermediary role between service outsourcing suppliers innovation ability.

Notice of Retraction Cluster Density, External Search and Innovation Performance: Evidence from the ZGC Science Park

Jianfeng Wu; Min Liu; Zijie Li; Yonggui Wang

This paper adopts a contingency perspective to investigate the relationship among cluster density, external search, and innovation performance of high-technology ventures. Specifically, this study argues that local density and external search have both separate and joint effects on a firms innovation performance. To test our hypotheses, we draw a three-year sample from the Zhongguancun Science Park. The empirical findings provide strong support for the above arguments.
