A new lower bound for the frequency assignment problem

Dong-wan Tcha; Yongjoo Chung; Taek-jin Choi

We propose a new lower bound on the number of frequencies required to meet the frequency demands in a cellular network. It extends Gamsts (1986) work by devising a procedure of frequency insertion, which makes the best of unexploited frequency spaces between the assigned frequencies. Our lower bound is claimed to have much wider and easier real-world applicability due to its relaxed prerequisite condition. Furthermore, it is shown via an illustrative example to be much tighter than its previous counterpart.

Spectrum-efficient call control in a dual-mode TDMA cellular system

Dong-wan Tcha; Chun-Hyun Paik; Yongjoo Chung

This study deals with a call control strategy in a dual-mode time-division multiple access (TDMA) cellular system, which provides services both to analog and digital calls. Since analog calls consume the frequency resource several times as much as digital calls, we consider a call control strategy of the threshold type that the number of active analog calls is restricted within a prespecified level. Given the arrival rates and the grade of service (GOS) for both types of calls in the cells, two nonlinear integer optimization problems are considered for a multicell system as well as for a single cell system. One problem is to find the threshold parameters for optimizing the relevant objective measures. The other is to obtain the minimum numbers of required channels in the cells satisfying the GOS of both types of calls. The solution methods for the two kinds of optimization problems are devised based on the properties of the objective function and the blocking probabilities of both call types. The efficiency of the proposed algorithms is verified by extensive computational experiments with realistic input data.

Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventory Calculation of Korean Glass Industry through the Bottom-up Production Process Analysis

Chun-Hyun Paik; Yongjoo Chung; Jonghoon Yoo

The glass production is classified into an energy intensive industry. This study develops a systematic procedure to derive Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission inventory for the Korean glass industry. Based on the bottom-up approach in which the energy intensity in each production process is characterized, the EBs (energy balances) of glass production processes are derived. And the GHG emission is calculated for each of four types of glasses-flat glass, container glass, fiber glass, and LCD glass.

Greenhouse Gas Emission and Abatement Potential Analysis for the Korean Horticulture Energy Sector Using Bottom-Up Approach

Chunhyun Paik; Yongjoo Chung

A bottom-up approach has been conducted to estimate greenhouse gas (GHG) emission and to analyze the marginal abatement cost for the Korean horticulture energy sector. With the systematically derived activity and energy balance data, the BAUs have been estimated, along with the marginal abatement cost over the period 2010 through 2030. The result from the marginal abatement cost analysis may provide general guidelines and procedures for the establishment of GHG abatement polices.

A Bottom-up Approach for Greenhouse Gas Emission Analysis of Korean Shipbuilding Industry

Chunhyun Paik; Hugon Kim; Young Jin Kim; Yongjoo Chung

This study presents a bottom-up approach for analyzing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for the shipbuilding industry in Korea. The overall procedures for deriving GHG emissions from the Korean shipbuilding industry are presented. Based on the long-term forecast on energy demands of the Korean shipbuilding industry, reference energy system (RES) and energy balance (EB) for the shipbuilding process are derived for bottom-up modeling.

SMDP-Based Optimization Model for Call Admission Control in an OFDMA Wireless Communication Systems

Chunhyun Paik; Yongjoo Chung

This study addresses the call admission control(CAC) problem for OFDMA wireless communication systems in which both subcarriers and power should be considered together as the system resources. To lessen the exccessive allocation of radio resources for protecting handoff calls, the proposed CAC allows the less data rate than their requirements to handoff calls. The CAC problem is formulated as a semi-Markov decision process(SMDP) with constraints on the blocking probabilities of handoff calls. Some extensive experiments are conducted to show the usefulness of the proposed CAC model.

IN HEURISTICS FOR THE ACCESS NETWORK DESIGN PROBLEM IN UMTS MOBILE COMMUNICATION NETWORKS

Hugon Kim; Chun-Hyun Paik; Yongjoo Chung

In this paper we study the access network design problem in Universal Mobile Telecommunication Systems (UMTS) networks. Given the location of radio base stations (node-Bs), their traffic demands, and the candidate facility centers for locating radio network controllers (RNCs), the problem is to determine the configuration of access network, including the number and location of facility centers, the number of RNCs in each facility center, and the links between RNCs and node-Bs, with the objective being to design such a network at the minimum cost. We provide a mathematical formulation of the problem with constraints on RNC and node-B capacities, along with a lower bounding method. We develop a heuristic algorithm with two different initial solution methods designed to strengthen the solution quality. The computational efficacy of their procedures is then demonstrated on a number of test problems.
