Numerical Synthesis of an Optimal Low-Sidelobe Beam Pattern for a Microphone Array

Yoomi Hur; Young-Cheol Park; Jonathan S. Abel; Dae Hee Youn

This letter describes a numerical algorithm for synthesizing optimal low-sidelobe beampatterns. The pattern synthesis problem is formulated as a constrained optimization that minimizes the spatially weighted energy arriving at the array subject to unit gain in the look direction and a constant sidelobe level. The weighting takes on the form of a sensor correlation matrix, parameterized between uncorrelated sensor noise and correlated signal arrival terms according to a balancing factor. Setting the balancing factor to its extreme values of 0 and 1, produces, respectively, the optimal Riblet-Chebyshev and Delay-and-Sum type beamformers. In between, the method generates a low-sidelobe beamformer with varying beamwidths that provides a trade-off between White Noise Gain and Directivity Index. Simulation examples demonstrate optimal and intermediate designs for uniform and non-uniform sensor spacings.

An open-source spherical microphone array design

We present an open-source design for producing a spherically baffled, 32-channel microphone array having elements aligned with the vertices and face centers of a dodecahedron, and fabricated using additive manufacturing (3-D printing). The design approach emphasized low cost, assembly ease, and acoustic integrity. Mechanical, electrical, and acoustical design considerations are discussed, as are assembly and calibration details. The baffle is a 10-cm-radius sphere, built from separable hemispheres, and supported by a 2-cm-diameter cylindrical stand that serves as a conduit for the microphone signal cables. Microphone capsules are mounted on preamp boards, which provide balanced line level outputs, and press fit to the baffle. The performance of the array is characterized, and an example application to spatial room impulse response measurement is provided. Design documents, including the enclosure model and preamp electrical design and board layout, are provided at https://ccrma.stanford.edu/~granzow/spher...

Efficient Individualization Method of HRTFs Using Critical-band Based Spectral Cue Control

Yoomi Hur; Young-Cheol Park; Seok-Pil Lee; Dae Hee Youn

Recently, 3-D audio technologies are commonly implemented through headphones. A major problem of the headphone-based 3-D audio is in-the-head localization, which occurs due to the inaccurate Head-Related Transfer Function (HRTF). Since the individual measurements of HRTFs are impractical, there have been several researches for HRTF customization. In this paper, an efficient method of customizing HRTFs for the sound externalization is proposed. Firstly, it is determined which part will be customized in HRTF through psychoacoustical experiments. Then, the method controlling spectral notches and envelopes to provide individual localization cues are described. Since the proposed method is based on a critical-band rate, the structure is much simpler than that of previous studies, but still effective. The performance was evaluated through a series of subjective tests, and the results confirmed that the customized HRTF using proposed method could replace the measured individual HRTF successfully.
