Viewing angle performance of TN-LCD with hybrid aligned nematic film

Takehiro Toyooka; E Yoda; T Yamanashi; Yoshihiro Kobori

We developed a novel hybrid aligned nematic film that improves viewing angle performance of twisted nematic liquid crystal display (TN-LCD). The viewing angle performance of the normally white (NW) TN-LCD with the compensation film was evaluated by both computer simulation and experiment. The compensated NW-TN-LCD exhibits wide viewing angle performance including good gray scale stability and low color shift.

We compared the viewing angle performance of NW-TN-LCDs compensated with hybrid-aligned discotic (DH) and hybrid-aligned nematic (NH) films. We find that the DH films give superior contrast over wider viewing angles than the NH films, but that the NH films show less color shift at wider angles with better gray scale stability. We conclude that DH films are most suitable for data viewing in notebook computer displays and desktop monitors, whereas NH films are more suitable for viewing natural images in television and multimedia applications.

Abstract In the application of cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) polymer film to mono-color polarizers, diffusive reflection is preferred rather than mirror reflection at the point of visibility. This led us to develop a diffusion-type CLC (D-CLC) film. The newly developed D-CLC film exhibits high circular dichroism with bright color reflection that can be observed from almost all directions. The layer structure of the D-CLC film was directly confirmed by analysis with transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was found that the diffusive property and polarization of the reflected light are mainly affected by the layer structure of the D-CLC.
