Subcellular distribution of cobalamin-dependent methionine synthase in Euglena gracilis z

Abstract Euglena gracilis z contained cobalamin-dependent methionine synthase (EC 2.1.1.13) catalysing the synthesis of methionine from N 5-methyltetrahydrofolate and homocysteine. The enzyme activity was distributed in the cytosol (68.9%), chloroplasts (18.4%) and mitochondria (9.5%). The different behaviour of the cytosolic, chloroplastic and mitochondrial enzymes during DEAE-cellulose column chromatography suggests that they are distinct proteins which function to supply methionine for protein synthesis in the individual organelles.
