Abstract The base strength and partition coefficient of nicotine and its related compounds including β-pyridylalkylamines of variously modified side chain structures are correlated with free-energy-related substituent constants such as the Taft σ ∗ , the hydrophobic parameter π, and hydrogen bonding index nH. Except for certain tertiary compounds, the logarithms of dissociation constant and partition coefficient are well correlated by linear combination of substituent parameters. Exceptions might be ascribed to unusual steric effects or intramolecular interactions which are caused when bulkiness of length of side chain substituents exceeds a certain point.
