Abstract New Raney nickel coated electrodes have been developed for hydrogen evolution cathodes in alkaline media. The electrodes are made by a composite-coating technique from a nickel plating bath in which pulverized Raney nickel alloy is uniformly dispersed. The results of many tests under different conditions are reported. The electrodes exhibit low hydrogen overvoltages (80–100mV at 90°C, at 200–400mA cm−2 in 35wt% NaOH and 60–80mV at 200mA cm−2 at 90°C in a cell liquor) and excellent stability under different operating conditions.

Abstract The study of a new alkaline type ion-exchange membrane water electrolysis, on the basis of AZEC, developed by Asahi Glass Co. Ltd. is described. AZEC is a membrane, Flemion DX, applied in conjunction with active electrodes, where the distance between the membrane and the electrode is maintained at zero, or nearly zero. Flemion DX is an organic and inorganic composite membrane, the surface of which is covered with porous inorganic nonelectrode layers. These layers make the membrane surface hydrophilic so gas bubbles hardly adhere, excluding problems caused by sticking of gas bubbles. In the laboratory AZEC cell, a cell voltage of about 1.7 V and a H2 purity of above 99.9% were achieved at 110°C, 70 A dm−2.
