A study of HLA-D clusters associated with DR4 was performed in the Japanese population. These clusters consist of DYT, DKT2, DB3, and Dw4. Forty-two Japanese typed as DR4 were investigated, and it was found that 17 (40.5%) were DYT, 7 (16.7%) DKT2, 7 (16.7%) DB3, and 4 (9.5%) Dw4.

This report describes 2 siblings with IgA nephropathy. Patient No. 1 was a 38-year-old woman with hematuria and proteinuria of 19 years duration. Her blood ABO type was A and Rh positive. She was found to have HLA-A2,Aw24; Bw54 , Bw48 ;Cwl,C-;DR1,DR4. Her renal specimen was diagnosed as the advanced stage of IgA nephropathy histologically. Patient No. 2 was a 41-year-old man who was a brother of patient No. 1. His blood ABO type was O and Rh positive. His serotype for the HLA was found to be HLA-Aw24,A-;Bw35, Bw54 ;Cw1,Cw3;DR4, DRw9 . His renal histology showed the advanced stage of IgA nephropathy. It is suggested that an abnormal immune response linked to gene coding for HLA-DR4 antigen might be involved in the development of IgA nephropathy.

HLA‐C typing was performed on 40 unrelated Japanese patients with psoriasis vulgaris. The patient group consisted of 22 patients who had psoriatic HLA antigens i.e., B13 in seven cases, B17 in one case and B37 in 14 cases; and 18 patients who had none of these specific HLA antigens. HLA‐C typing was also performed on 40 unrelated healthy Japanese controls. Cw6 was found in 55.0% of the patients as compared with 5.0% of the healthy controls. All patients (21 cases) who had either B13 or B37 were positive for Cw6. Both controls who were positive for Cw6 also had B37. These results suggest the possibility of a linkage disequilibrium between Cw6 from locus C and B13 and B37 from locus B, and/or an association between Cw6 and susceptibility to psoriasis.

HLA-D/DR linked immune response to Candida allergen: An in vivo and vitro study in Japanese

Immune response to Candida allergen in man was studied using the lymphocyte reaction in vitro and the skin test in vivo. One hundred and ten normal healthy Japanese were typed for HLA-A, B, D and DR. It was found that HLA-B7, Dw1 and DR1 were strongly associated with high responsiveness and Den and Mt2 with low responsiveness. In a family study, the inheritance of high responsiveness was observed. In the reaction patterns of HLA-D homozygote and heterozygote cells, it was found that Dw1/DR1 and Dw12/DR2 were associated with a high responders and that DYT/DR4 and DEn (6.1)/DR- were associated with low responders. It is considered that the Dw1/DRl gene might be more dominant as an immune response; the Ir gene when compared to a gene such as the DYT, and the EDn (6.1) as an immune suppressive; Is gene. A genetic factor can be implicated in the secondary response (but not the primary response) to Candida allergen. Therefore, the existence of HLA-linked Ir and/or Is gene to Candida allergen is discussed.
