Optimal preventive maintenance interval and spare parts number in a rolling stock system

Won Young Yun; Young Jin Han; Goeun Park

In this paper, we deal with a preventive maintenance (PM) scheduling and spare parts problems for a rolling stock system. We determine the optimal PM interval and the optimal number of spare parts for components in the rolling stock system to minimize the system life cycle cost during satisfying the system target availability. The system availability and system life cycle cost are estimated by simulation. A genetic algorithm and a simulated annealing are proposed to find the optimal PM intervals and the optimal spare parts number of all components. Numerical examples are also studied.

An Optimal Reliability and Maintainability Design of a Searching System

Won Young Yun; Goeun Park; Young Jin Han

In this article, we deal with an optimal reliability and maintainability design problem of a searching system with complex structures. The system availability and life cycle cost are used as optimization criteria and estimated by simulation. We want to determine MTBF (Mean Time between Failures) and MTTR (Mean Time to Repair) for all components and ALDT (Administrative and Logistics Delay Times) of the searching system in order to minimize the life cycle cost and to satisfy the target system availability. A hybrid genetic algorithm with a heuristic method is proposed to find near-optimal solutions and compared with a general genetic algorithm.

In this paper, we deal with a simulation-based reliability and maintainability design problem of a warship and want to determine the optimal values of MTBF and MTTR of all units and ALDT of the warship. The system availability and life cycle cost are used as optimization criteria and estimated by simulation. A hybrid genetic algorithm with a heuristic method is proposed to find near-optimal solutions and numerical examples are also studied to investigate the effect of model parameters to the optimal solutions and compare with a general genetic algorithm.

Simulation-Based Risk Analysis of Integrated Power System

Ji Young Lee; Young Jin Han; Won Young Yun; Jae Goo Bin

In this paper, we deal with a risk analysis for an IPS (Integrated power system) and propose a simulation model combining the fault tree and event tree in order to estimate the system availability and risk level, together. Firstly, the basic information such as operational scenarios, physical structure, safety systems is explained in order to make the fault tree and event tree of the IPS. Next, we propose a discrete-event simulation model using a next-event time advance technique to advance the simulation time. Also the state transition and activity diagrams are explained to represent the relationship between the objects. By numerical examples, the redundancy allocation is considered in order to decrease the risk level of the IPS.

Heuristic Method for RAM Design of Multifunctional System

Young Jin Han; Hee Wook Kim; Won Young Yun; Jong Woon Kim

When designing a multifunctional system consisting of many components performing many functions or missions, it is important to determine the reliability, availability, and maintainability (RAM) of the system and components, and we consider system availability to be the optimization criterion. For given intervals of mean time between failure (MTBF) and mean time to repair (MTTR) of the components, we want to determine the values of MTBF and MTTR for all components that satisfy the target availability. A heuristic method is proposed for finding near-optimal solutions through simulation. We also study numerical examples to check effects of model parameters on the optimal solutions.
