Computing Education in Korea—Current Issues and Endeavors

JeongWon Choi; SangJin An; YoungJun Lee

Computer education has been provided for a long period of time in Korea. Starting as a vocational program, the content of computer education for students evolved to include content on computer literacy, Information Communication Technology (ICT) literacy, and brand-new computer science. While a new curriculum related to computer science was established in 2007, the range of computer education being provided in Korean schools has been repeatedly reduced. To identify the cause of this recent phenomenon, we review the computer education environment using the Darmstadt model, including educational systems, curricula, and teaching environments. Then we examine what factors affected the decline of computer education. The major causes of failure are found to be the absence of policy and a comprehensive evaluation method. These causes have led to a reduction in the selection ratio of computer-related subjects and in the number of students taking computer classes. Based on this understanding, we bring some fundamental message for establishing robust computer science education.

Puzzle Based Algorithm Learning for Cultivating Computational Thinking

JeongWon Choi; YoungJun Lee; EunKyoung Lee

Computational thinking (CT), which is the core of the Computer Science field, is an essential thinking process to solve problems effectively and efficiently using computing systems. Learners must be able to design algorithms, identify the appropriate algorithm design skill for a specific problem, and apply it to the problem. Aiming to stimulate learners’ interest in learning algorithm design skills, we developed puzzle-based algorithm learning program that has a user-friendly format tailored to real-world scenario. We investigated the effect of this puzzle-based algorithm learning program on learners’ CT abilities. The results provide evidence that puzzle based algorithm learning program is effective for developing learners’ CT. The study suggests that puzzle based algorithm learning is worth as a learning model for improving CT of learners.

Seong-Won Kim; YoungJun Lee

An Comparative study on informatics curriculum: focused on Korea, United states, and United Kingdom

YoungJun Lee; Seogn-Won Kim; Seounghey Paik

Since the importance of software in society, software education has been globally introduced. Korean government is also trying to promote talents by the revision of curriculum; however, due to the lack of lesson hour, education course is not enough to foster sufficient software focused talents. Thus, by supplementation of present curriculum, the development of new curriculum model has been needed. In this study, as a basic research of this development of curriculum model, curriculum revised in 2015 of Korea was compared with that of U. S. A. and that of England. Through the comparison, it was possible to find out what is needed to make up for informatics curriculum. This result could be used as an advanced research for the development of software curriculum model with Korean education context.

Art based STEAM Education Program using EPL

Seongkyun Jeon; YoungJun Lee

The rapidly changing 21st-century knowledge and information society is emphasizing converged education that crosses various academic fields. In particular, the society expected the cultivation of the talent who balance scientific creativity and artistic sensitivity by adding arts to the existing converged education revolving around science and technology. However, at present, most STEAM education has been actively conducted with a focus on science and technology, whereas the subject of arts has been regarded or utilized as a supplementary means. Its problem is that the educational characteristics and values of art education have not been effectively utilized in educational terms and this could lead to superficial integrated education. In this respect, this ∙제1저자 : 전성균 ∙교신저자 : 이영준 ∙투고일 : 2014. 1. 28, 심사일 : 20014. 2. 27, 게재확정일 : 2014. 3. 27. (Dept. of Computer Education, Korea National University of Education) 150 Journal of The Korea Society of Computer and Information April 2014 study had the knowledge of various fields, such as science, technology, and mathematics, utilized usefully during the process of experiencing and creating arts. Accordingly, this study designed an education programs as with the case of Nam-Jun Baek who expanded the dominion of arts by creatively utilizing his own times scientific technologies. In this educational process, the target program was developed in a manner that enables EPL to be utilized essentially as the studys knowledge-based tool and medium. The results of applying this educational program in 5th-grade elementary school students showed that the program has positive effects on the creative attributes of the students. ▸

Group Key Agreement Scheme for Single Link Failure in Ad-Hoc Network

Jin Ok Hwang; Young Il Choi; Joo Sang Youn; YoungJun Lee; Sung Gi Min

In ad-hoc networks, mobile nodes cannot be supported the group authentication by Internet infrastructure. To resolve the group authentication in ad-hoc networks, several protocols for group key agreement have been proposed. These protocols assumes the reliable communication links between MNs. However, wireless links in ad-hoc network are inherently unreliable. We propose a group key agreement algorithm based on hyper-cube key agreement scheme to cope with failed links during group key agreement. When a link failure occurs in hyper-cube key agreement scheme, the key agreement keeps up the process no longer. The algorithm deals with any single link failures on any one plane of a hyper-cube.
