Dielectric properties of hydrazine and its aqueous solutions

E. S. Verstakov; Yu. M. Kessler; A. P. Tarasov; V. S. Khar'kin; P. S. Yastremskii

The complex dielectric constant of aqueous solutions of hydrazine in the centimeter range of wavelengths in the temperature range 5 to 50/sup 0/C has been measured by the wave guide method. The complex dielectric constant of the mixtures studied is described by the Debye equation. The concentration dependence of the relaxation time has a maximum corresponding to the composition N/sub 2/H/sub 4/ . H/sub 2/O. The static dielectric constant of aqueous solutions of hydrazine has been determined; its concentration dependence shows a negative deviation from additivity, the energy characteristics of the dielectric relaxation processes have been calculated. On the basis of the experimental data obtained, suggestions have been put forward regarding the nature of the molecular motion in hydrazine--water mixtures.

Structure of the labile solvate layers of alkali metal cations and the quadrupole relaxation of the nuclei of the ions

A. I. Podkovyrin; A. I. Mishustin; Yu. M. Kessler

Theoretical models and experimental data on the spin-lattice relaxation times of the nuclei of the 7Li+ and 23Na+ ions in individual and mixed solvents have been analyzed. It has been shown that the relaxation is determined by changes taking place in the configuration of the solvated complex. The rate of the quadrupole relaxation of the nuclei of ions contains information on the structure and dynamics of their solvate layers. Its use is being held back, however, by the fact that the theory has not yet been developed in sufficient detail. The present paper describes an lnvest~gation of the mechanism of the quadrupole relaxation of the nuclei of lithium and sodium ions in solution, and in particular, the determination of the type of mobility of the particles close to the ion. The general theory [i] gives an expression relating the rate of the spin-lattice relaxation (I/TI) to the correlation function G(t) of the fluctuations of the interaction of the nucleus with the environment (t is the time) co

Investigation of the electric conductivity of benzene solutions of hydrogen chloride and tetra-n-butylammonium chloride

N. M. Alpatova; Yu. M. Kessler; A. I. Gorbanev

1. The electric conductivity of mixtures of (n-C4H9)4HCl with HCl in benzene was measured. The formation of the compound (n-C4H9)4NCl·HCl was established. 2. The general conditions of the interaction between halides of quaternary ammonium bases and hydrogen halides were discussed.

Study of the thermodynamic properties of solutions of strong electrolytes in solvents with high dielectric constants

Yu. M. Povarov; Yu. M. Kessler; A. I. Gorbanev

1. The activity coefficients of NaCl in formamide and KCl in N-methylformamide were measured at 25°. 2. The change in the free energy of solvation of the ions was determined upon their transfer from water to the indicated solvent at infinite dilution.
