ABSTRACT An experimental study has been canied out on the characteristics of water adsorption isotherms for typical materials used in a box of tobacco products or cigarettes. Equilibrium moisture contents for different varieties of tobacco, papers, filters and activated carbons were measured with a flow-type adsorption system under the conditions of a constanttemperature a t 303 K and relative humidities ranging from 5 % to 80 92. A modified Dubinin-Astakhov equation was accurately applied to represent the water adsorption isotherms for all materials. These isotherms were characterized by three parameters contained in the equation and divided into three groups; i.e. 1)tobacco, 2)papers a s well a s filters, and 3)activated carbons, depending mainly on pore sizes a s well a s the degree of swelling of the materials used. Under a relative humidity of around 60 %, the main water migration was found to take place in the tobacco and the percentage of migrated water to the total was assessed to be more than 80 ...

ABSTRACT An experimental study has been carried out on the characteristics of binary adsorption isotherms of water and volatile flavor for typical materials used in a box of a tobacco product or cigarettes. Ethyl acetate chosen as a model for water–soluble volatile flavor. Binary adsorption isotherms for the tobacco, papers, filters, and activated carbons were measured with a flow–type multi–component adsorption system under the canstant conditions of temperature a t 303 K and vapor pressure of water a t 2.5 kPain the vapor pressure range of ethyl acetate from 0 to 4.2 kPa. A linear equation was applied to express the binary adsorption isotherms for the tobacco, papers and filters, while a Dubinin–Astakhov equation was applied for the activated carbons. The binary adsorption was characterized into three groups, depending on the selectivity as well as the mechanism of adsorption; i.e.(l) for tobacco and papers, water was adsorbed much greater rather than ethyl acetate, (2) for filters, ethyl acetate was ad...

The transport rate of liquid water, i.e., the water penetration rate, into paper is one of the important physical properties in the printing, coating, and gluing processes. However, some kinds of paper are too thin to permit the measurement of the penetration rate in the direction of the thickness accurately. Thus, a novel method for measurement of the penetration rate has been developed. The large difference in electrostatic capacitance between soaked and dry paper and that in penetration rate between filter and thin paper were utilized as the foundation for this method. The time required for penetration through the whole sheet of thin paper was calculated from the measured penetration curve on the basis of theoretical analysis. As a result of the measurements in a relative humidity range of 40 to 70% it was concluded that this method could be useful in the characterization of thin paper materials with respect to penetration.
