SYNTHETIC STUDIES ON GLYCAN CHAINS

Publisher Summary This chapter reviews the progress made in the synthetic studies regarding iI-type glycans. In 1981, two papers appeared in connection with synthetic studies on iI-type glycans. The use of oxazoline derivative as the glycosyl donor to be derived from lactosamine was reported. Glycosylation of the glycosyl acceptor derived from lactosamine with 1.5 equivalents of the donor in the presence of p-toluenesulfonic acid in 1,2-dichloroethane for 18 hours at 60° afforded β1→3 linked tetrasaccharide derivative in 52% yield. The use of the same lactosamine donor for the synthesis of 3´, 6´-branched lactose derivative was reported in the same year. A total synthesis of octasaccharide, which constitutes a typical common structure involved in various I type glycans, was achieved in combination of the currently available synthesis technology in the field of carbohydrate chemistry with a reasonable synthesis strategy.
