The paper investigates the practice of Open Innovation (OI) of university spin-offs. Three interviews were conducted to discuss the knowledge of spin-offs about OI, their attitude to this innovation management strategy based on perceived advantages and disadvantages, and their motivation towards OI practice in the future. Problems with planning, control and trust appear to be some of the most important for OI success. Focusing on these and other urgent aspects of OI, the article discusses a research agenda that can help in formulating research questions and hypothesis, thus directing their efforts to search for solutions to identified problems.

This paper addresses the theoretical foundation for an economic concept largely present in some Eastern-European economic literature: the concept of “economic security of enterprise (ESE)”. In the first part, we provide a brief explanation of the specific conditions of economic and social transformation in the post-Soviet economic science that have led to the introduction of the term “economic security of enterprise”. Next, we discuss specific features of the concept based on a content analysis of Ukrainian research theses devoted to ESE. We conclude with a proposition of a definition of ESE, discussions of possible managerial application of this concept and determination of challenges for further research.

The value of the paper consists in evolving of a relatively unexploited concept of economic security of the organization. Guided by the constructivism approach, the author provides a brief overview of previous research on economic security of the organization, discusses a connection with the better-known notion of survival and main characteristics of security that create certain challenges for researchers. The proposed approach to organizational management through the prism of security allows connecting disjoined concepts used in organizational studies and highlighting aspects rather important for organizational survival and growth but mostly overlooked by scientists.
