Photodynamic therapy for deep-lying lesions needs an appropriate imaging modality, precise evaluation of tissue oxygen and an effective photosensitizer. Gadolinium based metalloporphyrins Gd(III)-HMME is proposed in this study as a potential multifunctional theranostic agent, as photosensitizer, ratiometric oxygen sensor and MRI contrast agent. The time resolved spectroscopy revealed the luminescence peak of Gd(III)-HMME at 710 and 779 nm with a lifetime of 64 μs in oxygen-free methanol to be phosphorescent. This phosphorescence is strongly dependent on dissolved oxygen concentration. Its intensity in oxygen saturated methanol solution is 21% of that in deoxygenated solution. The singlet oxygen quantum yields ΦΔ of HMME and Gd(III)-HMME in air saturated methanol solution were determined to be 0.79 and 0.40 respectively using comparative spectra method. These phenomena indicate that the oxygen sensibility and production of singlet oxygen of Gd(III)-HMME can fulfill the requirement of PDT treatment.

We have studied the ultrafast dynamics of coherent phonons in sapphire crystals irradiated with 60Co γ-rays for three different doses by femtosecond time-resolved coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (fs-CARS) technique at room temperature. The obtained fs-CARS signals exhibit well-defined quantum beats, which are ascribed to the interference of the 645 and 750 cm-1 phonon modes. The dephasing times of the two modes both decrease with increasing irradiation dose, which is due to the scattering of coherent phonons by the defects introduced by γ-ray irradiation.

The shock wave driven by short laser pulse is used to study the damage of brittle material K9 glass. The damage morphology of K9 glass surface indicates that the material has experienced different loading modes, respectively, at the central area and the surrounding area of the shock wave. At the central area of shock wave, the wavefront is plane and has a uniform pressure distribution, the material mainly suffers a longitudinal shock pressure; but on the edge the shock wave, the wavefront is approximately spherical, besides longitudinal pressure, transverse tensile stress will emerge inside the material. In the latter case, the damage threshold of the material is much smaller than that in the case of compressing by longitudinal pressure only. According to the relationship between damage area and shock pressure, an experimental method is proposed to measure the damage threshold of materials under shock loading. The damage threshold of K9 glass under spherical shock wave is measured to be about 1.12 GPa; an...

Steady-state absorption and fluorescence spectra, and time-resolved fluorescence spectra of coumarin 343 (C343) were measured in different solvents. The effect of the solvent on the spectral properties and dipole moment of the lowest excited state of C343 were investigated. It was found that the absorption and fluorescence spectra red-shifted slightly and strongly with increasing solvent polarity, respectively, because the charge distribution of the excited state leaded to the increasing difference between the absorption and fluorescence spectra with increasing solvent polarity. The dipole moment of the lowest excited state of C343 was determined from solvatochromic measurements and the quantum chemical calculation, and the results obtained from these two methods were fully consistent. Investigations of the time-resolved fluorescence of C343 in different solvents indicated that the fluorescence lifetimes increased nearly linearly with increasing solvent polarity from 3.09 ns in toluene to 4.45 ns in water. This can be ascribed to the intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions between C343 and hydrogen donating solvents.

Observation of laser-driven shock propagation by nanosecond time-resolved Raman spectroscopy

Guoyang Yu; Xianxu Zheng; Yunfei Song; Yangyang Zeng; Wencan Guo; Jun Zhao; Yanqiang Yang

An improved nanosecond time-resolved Raman spectroscopy is performed to observe laser-driven shock propagation in the anthracene/epoxy glue layer. The digital delay instead of optical delay line is introduced for sake of unlimited time range of detection, which enables the ability to observe both shock loading and shock unloading that always lasts several hundred nanoseconds. In this experiment, the peak pressure of shock wave, the pressure distribution, and the position of shock front in gauge layer were determined by fitting Raman spectra of anthracene using the Raman peak shift simulation. And, the velocity of shock wave was calculated by the time-dependent position of shock front.

Effect of structure on third order nonlinear optical performances for ZnO nanocomposites

Cun Chang; Yachen Gao; Qing Chang; Yunfei Song

The third order nonlinear optical properties of ZnO nanorods and ZnO nanoparticles in water, N,N-dimethyll formaide and ethanol were comparatively investigated by using Z-scan technique under nanosecond pulses at 532 nm. Experimental results show that the structure of ZnO nanocomposites has effect on their third order nonlinear optical performances, and the third order nonlinear optical properties of ZnO nanorods are larger than that of ZnO nanoparticles. The results were analyzed by use of the Maxwell-Garnett Effective Medium theory.
