Resource space model, OWL and database: Mapping and integration

Hai Zhuge; Yunpeng Xing; Peng Shi

Semantics exhibits diversity in the real world, mental abstraction world, document world, and machine world. Studying mappings between different forms of semantics helps unveil the uniformity in the diversity. This article investigates the mappings between three typical semantic models: the Web ontology language (OWL), relational database model, and resource space model (a classification-based semantic model). By establishing mappings between the semantic primitives of the three models, we study the mapping from OWL description onto resource space and analyze the normal forms of the generated resource space. Mapping back from resource space onto OWL description is then discussed. Further, we investigate the mapping between OWL description and relational database, as well as the mapping between relational database and resource space. Normal forms of the generated relational tables are analyzed. To support advanced applications on the future Web, we suggest integrating the resource space, OWL, and databases to form a powerful semantic platform that enables different semantic models to enhance each other.

Probabilistic Resource Space Model for Managing Resources in Cyber-Physical Society

Hai Zhuge; Yunpeng Xing

Classification is the most basic method for organizing resources in the physical space, cyber space, socio space, and mental space. To create a unified model that can effectively manage resources in different spaces is a challenge. The Resource Space Model RSM is to manage versatile resources with a multidimensional classification space. It supports generalization and specialization on multidimensional classifications. This paper introduces the basic concepts of RSM, and proposes the Probabilistic Resource Space Model, P-RSM, to deal with uncertainty in managing various resources in different spaces of the cyber-physical society. P-RSMs normal forms, operations, and integrity constraints are developed to support effective management of the resource space. Characteristics of the P-RSM are analyzed through experiments. This model also enables various services to be described, discovered, and composed from multiple dimensions and abstraction levels with normal form and integrity guarantees. Some extensions and applications of the P-RSM are introduced.

Extended resource space model

Hai Zhuge; Erlin Yao; Yunpeng Xing; Jie Liu

The resource space model (RSM) is a semantic data model based on orthogonal classification semantics for efficiently managing various resources in the future interconnection environment. This paper extends the RSM in theory by formalizing the resource space, investigating its characteristics from the perspective of set theory, defining the resource space schema and developing its normal forms. The topological space properties of the resource space are presented based on the definition of a distance in the space and the construction of a quotient space structure. The proposed theory ensures the RSM to correctly and efficiently specify and manage resources.

Integrity theory for resource space model and its application

Hai Zhuge; Yunpeng Xing

The Resource Space Model (RSM) is a semantic data model based on orthogonal classification semantics for effectively managing various resources in interconnection environment. In parallel with the integrity theories of relational and XML-based data models, this keynote presents the integrity theory for the RSM, including the entity integrity constraints based on the key system of the RSM, the membership integrity constraints, the referential integrity constraints, and the user-defined integrity constraints relevant to applications. This theory guarantees the RSM to correctly and efficiently specify and manage resources. Its implementation approach and application in culture exhibition are demonstrated.

Transformation from OWL description to resource space model

Hai Zhuge; Peng Shi; Yunpeng Xing; Chao He

Semantics shows diversity in real world, document world, mental abstraction world and machine world Transformation between semantics pursues the uniformity in the diversity The Resource Space Model (RSM) is a semantic data model for organizing resources based on the classification semantics that human often use in understanding the real world The design of a resource space relies on knowledge about domain and the RSM Automatically creating resource space can relieve such reliance in RSM applications This paper proposes an approach to automatically transform Web Ontology Language description into resource space The normal forms of the generated resource space are investigated to ensure its normalization characteristic The Dunhuang culture resource space is used to illustrate the approach.

Pushing scientific documents by discovering interest in information flow within e-science knowledge grid

Lianhong Ding; Xiang Li; Yunpeng Xing

The Knowledge Grid is an intelligent and sustainable Internet application environment that enables people and roles to effectively capture, publish, share and manage explicit knowledge resources. As an important function of the e-Science Knowledge Grid, this paper proposes an approach to effectively push scientific documents within research teams by detecting the social characteristics in self-organized network, discovering interest in information flow, and capturing dynamic changes of interests over time. The proposed approach can be used in any cooperative organizations.

In the current Web, e-document has been the most common vehicle for delivering and exchanging information. As the amount of e-documents has grown enormously, effective classification facilities are urgently needed to classify and query e-documents users want. In this paper, we propose a method to classify e-documents into a set of predefined categories based on Fuzzy Cognitive Map (FCM). The e-documents are collected from Internet by a meta-search engine. FCM has been employed to capture the semantic relationships between keywords of e-documents. Experiments with a set of local e-documents have proved that this approach has high performance and can help users getting the e-documents efficiently and effectively. The proposed method has been implemented and integrated into the Dunhuang Feitian System to manage and classify e-documents.

Collaborating semantic link network with resource space model

Yunpeng Xing; Jie Liu; Xiaoping Sun; Erlin Yao

The Semantic Link Network model SLN and Resource Space Model RSM are semantic models proposed separately for effectively specifying and managing versatile resources across the Internet. Collaborating the relational semantics of SLN with the classification semantics of the RSM can support richer semantic modeling in applications. This paper introduces the Resource Class Hierarchies into the SLN and investigates to cooperatively model with the RSM. The proposed approach can be used as a normalized semantic overlay of the Knowledge Grid environment.

RSM and SLN: transformation, normalization and cooperation

Erlin Yao; Yunpeng Xing; Jie Liu; Xiaoping Sun

The Resource Space Model RSM and Semantic Link Network SLN are models of future interconnection environment, and the combination of them forms a rich semantic layer for the next-generation web. This paper investigates the combination between RSM and SLN. The methods of the transformation between RSM and SLN are proposed. From the perspective of transformation, the correlations between the normal forms of RSM and SLN are investigated. The investigations show that although RSM and SLN are independently proposed, they are well-cooperated models for the future Semantic Web and Knowledge Web.

Resource Space Model (RSM) is a semantic model to manage and share heterogeneous resources on the Internet. This paper focuses on the general architecture, physical implementation and application of RSM. The RSM system adopts Client/Server mode for users to utilize resource spaces through the Internet. The resource spaces are designed based on domain knowledge and stored as XML files in the server. The tool 3DBrowser provides a friendly interface with three-dimensional scene to display resource spaces, locate and operate on resources. Based on the architecture and tools, a Dunhuang RSM system has been developed as a collaboration platform to organize and share the resources of Dunhuang Culture Grid. The system provides an efficient resource locating way based on the classification of resources and improves the efficiency of research.
