Perfluoroalkylsulfone reactions with nucleophiles

Michael D. Barrera; Yuri Cheburkov; William M. Lamanna

Perfluorodialkylsulfones were found to react readily with metal hydroxides in water or alcohol solution and with ammonia to form fluorinated sulfonic acid derivatives.

2,2-Dihydroperfluoropentane (HFC 4310 MF) synthesis from HFP dimer

Yuri Cheburkov; George G.I. Moore

The thermodynamic dimer of hexafluoropropene (HFP) may be used for the one pot synthesis of 2H-perfluoro-2-pentene, which is the starting compound for preparation of 2,2-dihydroperfluoropentane (HFC 4310 mf).

Fluorinated olefins and oleum

Yuri Cheburkov; William M. Lamanna

Abstract Oleum has some advantages over pure sulfur trioxide and may be successfully used for preparation of beta-sultones from hexafluoropropene, 2H-pentafluoropropene, 6H-perfluoro-1-hexene and perfluoro(propylvinyl) ether (VE). Depending on the reaction conditions, the VE-sultone and tetrafluoroethane-beta-sultone (TFE-sultone) are different from other sultones. They are not stable in the presence of oleum and the oxidation of –CF 2 –SO 2 -group in the sultones leads to some new fluorooxalate derivatives.

A Lewis acid catalytic process for preparing fluorocarboxylic acid halides

Fred E. Behr; Yuri Cheburkov

Abstract Selected Group III and Group V Lewis acids were found to catalyze the isomerization and rearrangement of halosulfonyldifluoromethyl group (R f CF 2 SO 2 X, where X is either chlorine or fluorine) to form fluorocarboxylic acid halides (R f COX). Fluorodesulfoxylation of the halosulfonyldifluoromethyl group yielded SOF 2 as one of the two sulfur-containing oxides. Product analysis would suggest that both Lewis acid catalyzed and halogen exchange reactions are occurring and are dependent upon the starting halosulfonyldifluoromethyl material and Lewis acid.
