A search for new isotopes using in-flight fission of a 345 MeV/nucleon 238 U beam has been carried out in the commissioning experiment of the next-generation in-flight radioactive isotope beam separator BigRIPS at the RI Beam Factory at the RIKEN Nishina Center. Two neutron-rich palladium isotopes 125 Pd and 126 Pd were observed for the first time, which demonstrates the great potential of the RIKEN RI beam factory.

Abstract The cluster structures of the excited states in 11B are studied by analyzing the isoscalar monopole and quadrupole strengths in the B 11 ( d , d ′ ) reaction at E d = 200 MeV . The excitation strengths are compared with the predictions by the shell-model and antisymmetrized molecular-dynamics (AMD) calculations. The large monopole strength for the 3 / 2 3 − state at E x = 8.56 MeV is well described by the AMD calculation and is suggested to be an evidence for a well developed 2 α + t cluster structure.

Two-proton relative momentum (q(pp)) and opening angle (theta(pp)) distributions from the three-body decay of two excited proton-rich nuclei, namely Al-23 --> p + p + Na-21 and Mg-22 --> p + p + Ne-20, have been measured with the projectile fragment separator (RIPS) at the RIKEN RI Beam Factory. An evident peak at q(pp) similar to 20 MeV/c as well as a peak in theta(pp) around 30 degrees are seen in the two-proton break-up channel from a highly-excited Mg-22. In contrast, such peaks are absent for the Al-23 case. It is concluded that the two-proton emission mechanism of excited Mg-22 is quite different from the Al-23 case, with the former having a favorable diproton emission component at a highly excited state and the latter dominated by the sequential decay process

In high-resolution (,) experiments under 0° the complete B(E1) strength distribution can be studied in stable nuclei. At the Research Center of Nuclear Physics in Osaka, Japan, the cross sections and observables for the polarization transfer of E1 and M1 excitations in 120Sn were measured for scattering angles Θ = 0° − 4° in an excitation energy range of 5 - 25 MeV. From the present measurement the complete B(E1) strength distribution and the branching ratios of the PDR to the ground state can be extracted. The experimental setup, the principle of backgound subtraction and first results on the E1 strength are presented.

Reaction cross sections for stable nuclei at intermediate energies have been measured precisely and systematically. The data have been found to be reproduced nicely by the optical‐limit approximation of Glauber theory modified to include the nucleon multiple scattering effect and the Fermi‐motion effect. Applying this prescription, the nucleon density distribution of 17Ne has been studied. The surface structure of 8B and 11Be has been also studied using this prescription and hydrogen targets. Using the RIBF that has just started application to studies of exotic nuclei, neutron‐rich Ne isotopes around the Island of Inversion have been investigated through measurements of their interaction cross sections.

We have measured two‐proton momentum and angular correlations for the 23Al excited states from the 23Al radioactive beam on a 12C target at an energy of 60∼70 A MeV at the projectile fragment separator beamline (RIPS) in the RIKEN Ring Cyclotron Facility. The decay products, namely 21Na+p+p from 23Al are clean identified. The relative momentum and opening angle between two protons in the rest frame of three body decay channels demonstrate that there are some diproton emission components from 2He cluster for the excited 23Al.
