We have experimentally studied the passive Q-switching performance of a diode-pumped Nd-doped gadolinium gallium garnet (Nd:GGG) laser with a GaAs saturable absorber. Stable Q-switched pulses as short as 9 ns with a repetition rate of 196.1 kHz have been obtained with an appropriately coated GaAs wafer used as the output coupler. At 12.44 W of the absorbed pump power, an average output power of 1.03 W has been obtained and the corresponding pulse energy and peak power are 5.25 μJ and 0.58 kW, respectively.

A diode-side-pumped continuous-wave Nd:GGG laser operating at dual-wavelength (1110 and 1105 nm) and single wavelength of 1110 nm is demonstrated for the first time. The maximum output power of the 1110 and 1105 nm dual-wavelength operation is 13.2 W. By adjusting the orientation of an insertion mirror, the relative intensities of the two wavelengths can be changed. Thus single wavelength operation at 1110 nm is obtained, and the output power is 9.6 W.

The Nd:(LuxGd1?x)3Ga5O12 (Nd:LGGG) laser operating at 1329?nm in both the continuous wave (CW) and the passively Q-switched (PQS) regimes has been successfully demonstrated. With an absorbed pump power of 18.8?W, a maximum CW output power of 3.7?W was obtained, corresponding to an optical?optical conversion efficiency of 19.6% and a slope efficiency of 20.9%. The PQS laser performance was obtained using a V3+:YAG crystal as the saturable absorber. The maximum average output power, shortest pulse width, largest pulse energy and highest peak power were 0.75?W, 25.9?ns, 43.6??J and 1.7?kW, respectively. The results indicate that a Nd:LGGG crystal with a low Lu-doping level (0.66?at.%) could be a novel potential laser gain medium suitable for laser diode pumping and PQS operation at a wavelength of 1.3??m.

We report a Nd:LGGG laser at 1062 nm in the operations of the continuous-wave (CW) and passively Q-switching. The maximum CW output power of 5.62 W was obtained, corresponding to an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 49.0% and slope efficiency of 55.9%. By using Cr4+:YAG with initial transmission of 94% as the saturable absorber, for the first time, we got the maximum passively Q-switched output power of 1.21 W, accompanied with a highest pulse repetition rate of 27.1 kHz and a shortest pulse width of 9.1 ns.
