The synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of novel manganese(III) phthalocyanines bearing 7-oxy-4-(4-methoxyphenyl)-8-methylcoumarin or/and chloro groups have been achieved. The effect of alpha and beta substitution on the ligand- and metal-based reduction processes of the manganese phthalocyanine complexes and their interaction with dioxygen were investigated. The more effective interaction of the central metal of the beta coumarin substituted complex with dioxygen than that of its alpha substituted analogue was attributed to the hindrance of the interaction by the nonplanarity in the case of alpha substitution. Similarly, the aggregation tendency was lower in the case of alpha substitution. Among the fabricated coumarin-substituted manganese phthalocyanine donor layer and fullerene (C60) acceptor based photovoltaic heterojunction devices, the one containing 8 exhibited the best performance. The effect of the thickness of the active Pc layer on solar cell parameters has also been investigated. A nearly thickness independent open circuit voltage was observed.

This study presents the synthesis, characterization and toluene sensing properties of copper(II), indium(III) acetate, mono-lutetium(III) acetate and tin(IV) phthalocyanines substituted with 2,6-dimethoxyphenol bioactive groups at the peripheral and non-peripheral positions. The effects of the substituent’s position on the toluene vapor detection capabilities of these compounds were investigated. Adsorption data were analyzed by using first-order and Elovich equations in order to investigate the adsorption kinetics. It was found that the kinetics of the toluene adsorption strongly depends on the position of the substituent groups. Our results showed that the Elovich equation fits the experimental data well for non-peripherally substituted Pc based sensors, while the pseudo first-order model best describes the adsorption data for peripheral substituted Pc based sensors.

The preparation of metal-free, Zn(ii), In(iii), and Cu(ii)-phthalocyanines containing tetrakis-(3-phenylphenoxy) groups was achieved by employing 3-(3-phenylphenoxy)phthalonitrile (1) and 4-(3-phenylphenoxy)phthalonitrile (2) as starting materials. The phthalonitriles and phthalocyanines were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, ultraviolet-visible, and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectroscopic techniques. The effect of the substituent group on the kinetics of benzene vapour adsorption onto these novel compounds was examined using three kinetics models: the pseudo first-order model, the Elovich equation, and a simple adsorption-desorption model. Results show that the benzene adsorption kinetics strongly depend on the position of the substituent groups.

In this study, response of the cofacial bis‐ phthalocyanine film to vapor of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) was investigated. Test gases were vapors of acetone, toluene, ethanol and ammonia. Measurements were carried out between the temperatures of 293 K–423 K. Bis‐phthalocyanine was dissolved in chloroform. Thin film of bis‐phthalocyanine was deposited by spraying method on glass substrate patterned with Interdigital Transducer (IDT). During the measurements 0.5 volts were applied to the IDT. Response characteristics of the film were determined by means of change in dc conductivity as a function of gas concentration and temperature. Gas concentrations were controlled by mass flow controller. Dry nitrogen was used as carrier gas. Vapor pressure of the VOCs was calculated using Antoine equation. Response characteristics of the film were determined in a wide range of gas concentration (0.25%–18%). The film showed good sensitivity to the VOCs vapors in the measurement range. The responses of the film were...
