Towards XML metamodel patterns for XML data modeling

XML, as an emerging industrial standard markup language, is very suitable for representing the metamodel that contains data structure, data element, relationship, rules, etc. In this paper we present a pattern-oriented approach for building a metamodel and defining the basic elements of an XML metamodel pattern. We also introduce some pattern examples, such as the embedding container, the self-embedding container, the link, and the association. Finally, we define some rules on how to use those pattern examples. The use of pattern-oriented approach simplifies and speed up metamodeling.

Use Viewpoints to Control Effort of HAZOP Analysis for Safety Critical Systems

Abstract The development of the functional safety requires safety analysis to verify the safety concepts and deliver the sufficient safety evidences. HAZOP is one of the widely-used safety analysis methods. However the effort of using HAZOP enormously increases with growing complexity of a system. Thus an efficient management of the effort without losing necessary detail becomes a key to successful use of HAZOP. In this paper we will present a novel approach that uses the viewpoint concept recommended by IEEE-1471 to simplify and structure the software failure analysis based on HAZOP. Each viewpoint deals with a set of failures by providing a failure pattern, appropriate documentation approaches, and typical failure control measures in such a way that the effort for HAZOP analysis is controlled to an acceptable range. In this paper we are going to present the key concept and the necessary discussion.
