Amplitude Regenerative Characteristics of RZ-DPSK Wavelength Converter Based on Four-Wave Mixing in SOA

Jiang Huan; Wen He; Han Liu-Yan; Guo Yili; Zhang Hanyi

We investigate the phase-preserving amplitude regenerative characteristics of the return-to-zero (RZ) differential-phase-shift-keying (DPSK) wavelength conversion based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). The Q-factor and the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) before and after conversion are experimentally obtained and analysed in different input noise power levels. In both the continuous-wave and synchronous clock pumping cases, we find that there is amplitude clamping in the FWM conversion due to the gain saturation of SOA, which can suppress the amplitude fluctuation of the converted DPSK signal before and after demodulation. We have achieved 2-dB Q penalty improvement in our experiment demonstration of 10Gbit/s RZ-DPSK signal with OSNR lower than 19dB.

Single-mode characteristics of short coupled-cavity semiconductor lasers

Wang Jianglin; Zhang Hanyi; Wu Qun; Zhou Bingkun

The characteristics of single-longitudinal-mode selection in short coupled-cavity (SCC) semiconductor lasers with a plane reflector are analyzed theoretically. It is found that the power ratio of the main mode to other side modes can be increased significantly by reducing the reflectivity of a laser diode facet adjacent to the external mirror. Based on the theoretical results, a new type of SCC laser is developed; single-longitudinal-mode output with 35-40 dB side mode suppression ratio is obtained under CW and 150 MHz modulation conditions.

All-optical NOR gate based on injection-locking effect in a semiconductor laser

Han Liu-Yan; Zhang Hanyi; Guo Yili

A scheme for all-optical NOR logic gate is proposed based on injection-locking effect in a semiconductor laser. In this scheme, signal light injection into the laser will cause frequency shift of laser modes, as a result, the probe light into the laser can be switched between injection-locked and unlocked status, and its output power will be modulated. Theoretical analysis for this scheme is carried out by using a model to describe the dynamics of the injection-locked laser. By numerical simulation, the influence of laser bias current, laser length, injected signal power and signal frequency on the output performance of NOR logic gate is quantitatively analyzed.

Polynomial-time adaptive routing algorithm based on spectrum scan in dynamic flexible optical networks

Liu Yang; Hua Nan; Zheng Xiaoping; Zhang Hanyi; Zhou Bingkun

Optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OOFDM) has been proposed as a highly spectrum-efficient modulation technique, which can provide flexible spectrum assignment with fine granularity. In OOFDM-based flexible optical networks, Routing and Spectrum Assignment (RSA) has become a key problem. However, widely used dynamic RSA schemes, such as Fixed Routing (FR) and K-shortest Paths (KSP) routing schemes, are not able to realize route computation based on the link state information, thus leading to poor blocking performance and inefficient resource utilization. To solve this problem, Adaptive Routing (AR) schemes, e.g., the Entire Path Searching (EPS) scheme, have been proposed recently. These schemes have low blocking probability; however, since their computational complexities are factorial, they are not suitable for use in real networks. In this paper, we propose a novel Spectrum-Scan Routing (SSR) scheme in dynamic flexible optical networks. To the best of our knowledge, SSR is the first polynomial-time AR scheme that can realize adaptive shortest-route computation. Simulation results show that our proposed SSR scheme has lower blocking probability and higher resource utilization compared with FR and EPS. Moreover, the worst-case computational complexity of SSR increases linearly with the network scale of the torus topologies, making it applicable to real networks.

All-Optical AND Logic Gate without Additional Input Beam by Utilizing Cross Polarization Modulation Effect

Han Liu-Yan; Wen He; Jiang Huan; Guo Yili; Zhang Hanyi

A novel design of all-optical AND gate is proposed by using cross polarization modulation effect in a semiconductor optical amplifier. In this scheme, an additional continuous-wave beam is not required as that in traditional scheme. AND output is obtained on either of two input signal wavelengths. The AND scheme is numerically simulated and experimentally demonstrated at a bit rate of 10 Gb/s successfully.

Zheng Xiaoping; Chu Yuan-Liang; Zhao Wei; Zhang Hanyi; Guo Yili

The interference-based method to measure the root-mean-square phase errors in SiO2-based arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) is presented. The experimental results show that the rms phase error of the tested AWG is 0.72 rad.

Mode selectivity of multisegment composite-cavity semiconductor lasers

Zhang Hanyi; Li Jian; Wang Jianglin; Zhou Bingkun

Abstract The single longitudinal mode (SLM) characteristics of narrow linewidth long-external-cavity semiconductor lasers has been improved significantly by using a multisegment composite-cavity configuration. In this paper, the mode selectivities of two-segment, three-segment and four-segment cavity semiconductor lasers have been analysed and compared. In experiments, a four-segment composite cavity laser exhibits SLM oscillation with side-mode suppression ratio of 30 dB even for total external cavity length of 75 cm. The oscillation linewidth is less than 200 kHz.

A Step-by-Step Tunable Compound External Cavity Semiconductor Laser with Two-Side Feedback Coupling

Wu Keying; Zhang Hanyi; Zheng Xiaoping; Teng Xiang; Shi Wei-Wei; Guo Yili

A kind of compound external cavity semiconductor lasers (CECSL) is presented, by which laser with a discretely tunable wavelength can be obtained to meet the potential demands of the wavelength division multiplexing system. By the introduction of two-side feedback coupling in the CECSL, the CECSL can operate more efficiently, and its side-mode suppression ratio is high up to 50 dB.
