Based on the nonlocal nonlinear Schrodinger equation, the propagation properties of anomalous hollow beams in strongly isotropic nonlocal media are investigated. The analytical expressions of the beam propagation, the on-axis intensity and the beam width are obtained. The results show that the evolution of the beam is periodical and the input power is the most important parameter. The input power determines the variation of the period. Furthermore, it is found that there exists a critical input power in the x direction and in the y direction separately when the initial beam widths in the two transversal directions are unequal. The beam width remains invariant in the corresponding transversal direction when the input power equals the critical power in one of the transversal directions. Selecting a proper input power, the beam can be broadened or compressed in the two transversal directions at the same time. In particular, the beam can be broadened (compressed) in one transversal direction, whereas in the other transversal direction, it is compressed (broadened), i.e., the transversal reverse transformation.

In this paper, we report on the enhanced pulse compression due to the interaction between the positive third-order dispersion (TOD) and the nonlinear effect (cross-phase modulation effect) in birefringent fibres. Polarization soliton compression along the slow axis can be enhanced in a birefringent fibre with positive third-order dispersion, while the polarization soliton compression along the fast axis can be enhanced in the fibre with negative third-order dispersion. Moreover, there is an optimal third-order dispersion parameter for obtaining the optimal pulse compression. Redshifted initial chirp is helpful to the pulse compression, while blueshifted chirp is detrimental to the pulse compression. There is also an optimal chirp parameter to reach maximum pulse compression. The optimal pulse compression for TOD parameters under different N-order solitons is also found.

In this paper, we investigate the modulation instability for generating femtosecond pulses in fibres with slowly decreasing dispersion. Higher-order dispersion and higher-order nonlinear effects are taken into account when the continuous wave or quasi-continuous wave evolves into sub-picosecond and femtosecond pulses by modulation instability in the optical fibres. Our research results show that the gain spectrum of the dispersion-decreasing fibres is much wider than that in conventional fibres. The third-order dispersion effect has no contribution to gain spectrum, while the self-steepening effect reduces the maximum value and gain bandwidth and the Raman self-scattering effect widens the extent to which the modulation instability occurs.

We report on the experimental observation of soliton pulses in an erbium doped fibre ring laser. The passive mode-locking is achieved using the nonlinear polarization rotation technique. By adjusting the pump power and the intracavity polarization controllers, a normal soliton, a stable 8th harmonic mode-locked pulse and a noise-like pulse have been observed in our laser. The experimental results revealed that the noise-like pulse is not suitable for the optical telecommunication, and in order to obtain the stable harmonic mode-locked soliton, a strong unstable CW laser field is necessary to mediate global soliton interaction. The formation mechanism of the harmonic mode-locked pulse has also been analysed.
