Synthesis of TiC Powder by Mechanical Alloying of Titanium and Asphalt

Li Bo; Cui Lishan; Zheng Yanjun; Xu Chunming

Abstract TiC powder was synthesized by mechanical alloying of titanium and asphalt in this paper. Deoiled asphalt as a carbon source not only provided element C in the fabrication of TiC but also cracked itself by the mechanical alloying process. The results of X-ray diffraction demonstrated the synthesis of cubic TiC. Gas phase chromatography showed that the discharged gas was composed of low molecular weight hydrocarbons, including H 2 , CH 4 and C 2 H 6 . The formation mechanism of titanium carbide by mechanical alloying, and the thermodynamic and kinetics were discussed. These results showed that mechanical alloying is a promising method to prepare TiC and to crack asphalt with some light fraction byproducts.

Effects of Severe Plastic Deformation and Heat Treatment on Transformation Behavior of Explosively Welded Duplex TiNi-TiNi

Li Juntao; Zheng Yanjun; Cui Lishan

The effects of severe plastic deformation and heat treatment on the transformation behavior of explosively welded duplex TiNi-TiNi shape memory alloys (SMAs) were investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) measurements. The explosively welded duplex TiNi-TiNi plate of 0.7 mm thickness was cold-rolled at room temperature to a 60% reduction in thickness and then annealed at different temperatures for different durations. The results showed that low temperature (623–723K) heat-treatment led to the crystallization of the amorphous region, and re-crystallization occurred in the specimens annealed at higher temperatures (over 873 K). Research indicated that the change of martensitic transformation temperature is due to the change of internal stresses with increasing heat treatment temperature. The change of annealing time also led to a change in martensitic transformation temperature, which was associated with the precipitation and decomposition of Ti3Ni4 in TiNi-1.

Reverse Transformation Behavior of TiNi Shape Memory Alloys Prestrained in the Parent Phase

Huai Limin; Cui Lishan; Zhang Yaibin; Zheng Yanjun; Han Xiangli

The reverse martensitic transformation of TiNi alloy wires prestrained in the parent phase was studied. Experimental results show that the reverse transformation of the TiNi alloys prestrained in the parent phase is significantly different from that of the TiNi alloys prestrained in the martensite phase. Three continual peaks appear on the DSC curves of wires with a small prestrain and one high temperature peak appears on the DSC curves of wires with a large prestrain.

Influence of pseudoelasticity on mechanical behavior of TiNi alloy under dynamic impact loading

Xu Renbo; Cui Lishan; Zheng Yanjun; Chen Hongling

The mechanical behavior of TiNi alloy and Cr12MoV alloy under dynamic impact loading was investigated with a self-made impact testing system. The real-time contact force was measured with a piezoelectric force sensor and digital signal processing system during impact. Equations for predicting instantaneous velocity and displacement were presented. The results showed that the TiNi alloy exhibited a plateau of maximum contact force with increasing impact height. At the plateau stage, TiNi alloy in the parent phase can absorb impact energy and keep the maximum contact force nearly identical due to its pseudoelasticity.
