The KLL dielectronic recombination processes of highly charged He-like to C-like Kr ions have been studied experimentally. The measurement was performed on the newly developed Shanghai electron beam ion trap (Shanghai-EBIT) facility. Characteristic x-rays from both dielectronic recombination and radiative recombination are detected as the electron beam energy is scanned through the resonances. The KLL resonant strengths obtained are 5.41 × 10−19, 4.33 × 10−19, 3.59 × 10−19, 2.05 × 10−19 and 0.98 × 10−19 cm2 eV for He-like to C-like Kr ions, respectively.

Neutrons (2.45 MeV) from deuterium cluster fusion induced by the intense femtosecond (30 fs) laser pulse are experimentally demonstrated. The average neutron yield 103 per shot is obtained. It is found that the yield slightly increases with the increasing laser spot size. No neutron can be observed when the laser intensity I < 4.3×1015 W/cm2.

An eight-beam 0.351-µm laser with pulse duration of about 1.0ns and energy of 260 J per beam was injected into a cylindrical cavity to generate intense x-ray radiation on the Shengguang II high power laser facility. A mixture foil of gold and gadolinium and a gold foil were attached on portion of a diagnostic hole in the mid-plane of the cavity and ablated by the intense x-ray radiation. The propagating time of the radiation heat wave in the mixture and the pure gold foil were measured with soft-x-ray spectrometer and by adopting space- and time-resolved measurement technology, respectively. The results show that the mixture of gold and gadolinium has higher Rosseland mean opacity than the gold sample in our experiment.

An Effective Thermal Splicing Method to Join Fluoride and Silica Fibers for a High Power Regime

Zheng Zhi-Jian; Ouyang Deqin; Zhao Junqing; Ruan Shuangchen; Yu Jun; Guo Chunyu; Wang Jinzhang

A repeatable and simple thermal splicing method for low loss splice between fluoride and silica fibers is presented. The minimum splicing loss of 0.58 dB is achieved experimentally with this approach. Meanwhile, the power capacity of this splicing joint is also tested with a high power fiber laser. The maximum input power is up to 15 W, only limited by the available power of the laser source. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on thermal splicing between fluoride and silica fibers operating in a high power regime without any complicated ion-assisted deposition process.

Orbital Relaxation Effects in the Calculation of Aluminum K α Absorptions

Jin Feng-Tao; Huang Tian-Xuan; Ding Yongkun; Zheng Zhi-Jian; Yuan Jian-Min

A recent experimental Kα transmission spectrum of an aluminum plasma is theoretically studied by a detailed level accounting model. It is found that the orbital relaxation effects of the K- and L-shell orbitals should be considered to calculate accurate line positions and strengths. To do this the initial and the final radial wave functions of Kα lines are respectively optimized by solving the full relativistic Dirac–Fock equation. Extensive configuration interaction calculations are performed to obtain the energy levels and the oscillator strengths. It is shown that both the line positions and the line strengths agree quite well with experiment when the orbital relaxations are considered.

Gold disk targets were irradiated using focusing and beam smoothing methods on Xingguang (XG-II) laser facilities with 350 nm wavelength, 0.6 ns pulse width and 20–80 Joules energies. Laser absorption, light scattering and X-ray conversion were experimentally investigated. The experimental results showed that laser absorption and scattered light were about 90% and 10%, respectively, under focusing irradiation, but the laser absorption increased 5%–10% and the scattered light about 1% under the condition of beam smoothing. Compared with the case of focusing irradiation, the laser absorption was effectively improved and the scattered light remarkably dropped under uniform irradiation; then due to the decrease in laser intensity, X-ray conversion increased. This is highly advantageous to the inertial confinement fusion. However, X-ray conversion mechanism basically did not change and X-ray conversion efficiency under beam smoothing and focusing irradiation was basically the same.

Implementing ATML in Distributed ATS for SG-III Prototype

Chen Ming; Yang Cun-bang; Lu Junfeng; Ding Yongkun; Yin Zejie; Zheng Zhi-Jian

With the forthcoming large-scale scientific experimental systems, we are looking for ways to construct an open, distributed architecture within the new and the existing automatic test systems. The new standard of Automatic Test Markup Language meets our demand for data exchange for this architecture through defining the test routines and resultant data in the XML format. This paper introduces the concept of ATML(Automatic Test Markup Language) and related standards, and the significance of these new standards for a distributed automatic test system. It also describes the implementation of ATML through the integration of this technology among the existing and new test systems.

By using the space-resolved spectrograph, the K-shell emission from laser-produced plasma was investigated. Electron density profiles along the normal direction of the target surface in aluminum laser-plasmas were obtained by two different diagnostic methods and compared with the profiles from the theoretical simulation of hydrodynamics code MULTI1D. The results corroborate the feasibility to obtain the electron density above the critical surface by the diagnostic method based on the Stark-broadened wings in the intermediately coupled plasmas.

We present the evolutions of the electron temperature and plasma expansion velocity with Thomson scattering experiment. The observed time-resolved ion-acoustic image is reproduced by a numerical code which couples the Thomson scattering theory with the output parameters of the one-dimensional hydrocode MEDUSA.

High-energy ion emission from intense-ultrashort (30fs) laser-pulse- cooled deuterium-cluster (80K) interaction is measured. The deuterium ions have an average energy 20keV, which greatly exceeds Zweibacks expectation [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84 (2000) 2634]. These fast deuterium ions can be used to drive fusion and have a broad prospect.
