Metallodielectric Opals of Layer-by-Layer Processed Coated Colloids

Ordered arrays of polystyrene colloids that are layer-by-layer coated with polyelectrolyte or polyelectrolyte/gold nanoparticle multilayers (see Figure and inside front cover) permit control over the peak position of the optical stop band of the assemblies through variation of the coating thickness and composition. The crystalline arrays made of polyelectrolyte multilayer-coated colloids can also be used for infiltration of gold nanoparticles.

Towards 3D metal-dielectric photonic crystal. Optical characterization

The interaction between surface plasmon resonance of the metallodielectric photonic crystal and the Bragg resonance of the opal photonic crystal has been studied. Two types of samples were investigated, differing in the topology of the metal content, metal-dielectric photonic crystals prepared using layer-by-layer deposition coating spheres with oppositely charged polyelectrolyte and Au nanoparticles and infiltrated opaline structures with Au nanoparticles. It was found that when the“red”-shift of plasmon resonance overlaps the Bragg diffraction, the latter become almost disperionless.

Optical characterization of metal-dielectric photonic crystals

In this paper, we report the results of experimental studies of reflectance and transmission spectra of opal-based metal-dielectric photonic crystals. The evolution of reflectance spectra with increase of the Au content towards emerging the novel resonances is strong evidence in favour of transformation the opal PBG structure from dielectric to metal dielectric type.
