Numerical Simulation for Coherent and Partially Coherent Beam Propagation through Atmospheric Turbulence

Qian Xian-Mei; Zhu Wenyue; Wang Anting; Gu Chun; Rao Rui-zhong

Propagation properties of coherent and partially coherent beams in atmospheric turbulence are investigated respectively by using numerical simulation. It is found that a partially coherent beam has a spreading larger than a coherent beam. However, from the point view of relative beam spreading and intensity scintillation, a partially coherent beam is less affected than the corresponding coherent beam, which may be the most important virtue of partially coherent beams that could be utilized to improve the performance of laser engineering. The beam wandering is almost independent of the degree of the source coherence. More aperture averaging occurs when the beam becomes more coherent.

Long-distance propagation of pseudo-partially coherent Gaussian Schell-model beams in atmospheric turbulence

Qian Xian-Mei; Zhu Wenyue; Rao Rui-zhong

Propagation properties of spatially pseudo-partially coherent Gaussian Schell-model beams through the atmospheric turbulence over a long-distance uplink path are studied by numerical simulation. A linear coordination transformation is introduced to overcome the window effect and the loss-of-resolution problem. The beam spreading, beam wandering, and intensity scintillation as functions of turbulence strength, source correlation length, and change frequency of random phase that models the partial coherence of the source are analyzed. It is found that the beam spreading and the intensity scintillation of the partially coherent beam are less affected by the turbulence than those of the coherent one, but it suffers from a more severe diffractive effect, and the change frequency of random phase has no evident influence on it. The beam wandering is insensitive to the variation of source correlation length, and decreases firstly then goes to a fixed value as the change frequency increases.

Abstract A novel technique for polarization-multiplexing ghost imaging is proposed to simultaneously obtain multiple polarimetric information by a single detector. Here, polarization-division multiplexing speckles are employed for object illumination. The light reflected from the objects is detected by a single-pixel detector. An iterative reconstruction method is used to restore the fused image containing the different polarimetric information by using the weighted sum of the multiplexed speckles based on the correlation coefficients obtained from the detected intensities. Next, clear images of the different polarimetric information are recovered by demultiplexing the fused image. The results clearly demonstrate that the proposed method is effective.

A novel technique for the simultaneous fusion, imaging and encryption of multiple objects using a single-pixel detector is proposed. Here, encoded multiplexing patterns are employed to illuminate multiple objects simultaneously. The mixed light reflected from the objects is detected by a single-pixel detector. An iterative reconstruction method is used to restore the fused image by summing the multiplexed patterns and detected intensities. Next, clear images of the objects are recovered by decoding the fused image. We experimentally obtain fused and multiple clear images by utilizing a single-pixel detector to collect the direct and indirect reflected light. Technically, by utilizing the patterns with per-pixel exposure control, multiple objects’ information is multiplexed into the detected intensities and then demultiplexed computationally under the single-pixel imaging and compressed sensing schemes. An encryption experiment is performed by setting the multiplexed patterns’ encoding as keys.
